A theory has been floating around that the child may not be real and is in fact Shepard hallucinating (for whatever reason). It's been discussed at length a few times before and we pretty much just agreed to wait and see about it.

Yup. I have to agree. There are better things for the Reapers to do to Shepard's brain than tug those heartstrings.

Occam's Razor--They thought a person would relate more if it was a character of their Shepard's gender; a little kid mirroring Shepard's own lost innocence.
