I sided with the mages, told Anders that I would run away with him.
he has the key to Hawkes house, when finishing the game and they take you back to Hawkes house,
he wasn't there.
did I screw up the game or something?
what happend to Anders?

He's hiding in Hawke's closet. Or in the lost-and-found box at the Viscount's keep. 
There's no need to worry, that happens to everyone, I think. None of my post-end game saves have had Merrill or Anders in the house, even when they moved in with me. The house there isn't "normal" gameplay, since the story has effectively ended and Hawke is supposed to have fled Kirkwall with his or her lover - the only reason you can enter it is so that you can access DLC content even after you have finished the main story.

Your group flees Kirkwall when the game ends. You can still go in the Estate to do DLC but thats about it.

No sweetly you didn't screw up going back to hawkes home just let's you play the dlc's anders is safe and on the run with you my guess would be he is hideing in Tavinter

I got this too. To get him to appear, just load up your post game save, click on the door and you'll get the party selection screen, and select Anders. Then go to the map ... but you can't actually go anywhere (except the Black Emporium IIRC), so just select the Hawke Estate again ... and he should now be there. You can't really do anything, and you still get his same lines from before the endgame sequence if you click on him, but at least he's there.

H went entirely insane, Varric had to have him sent to the funny farm with Bartrand. Isabella said he ran off with her but, no one ever saw them together, so I believe Varric.
