    I'm posting these paintings on behalf of my brother in law. The Mass Effect IP is fairly young, and there is a LOT of potential for expansion. There is so much of the universe that we never get to see: where are the females Turians? What do Volus look like without their pressure suits? What would female Salarians be like?

Female Salarians make up a very small percentage of the population, they serve a largely political function, and they lay dozens of eggs at a time. With this in mind, we decided that their appearance should communicate this. Darren made her huge and fat to communicate that she does no physical labor; this was also to explain how her body is able to produce "dozens" of eggs at once. This might explain why the Salarian council member is male; perhaps males are easier for other species to relate to?

Here Darren made an effort to come up with a design that both matches the voice and follows certain design elements of the suit. Volus use ammonia as a solvent instead of water, which means that they would have to exist in an extremely high pressure environment so that the ammonia can exist in a liquid state. This is part of the reason why the body was designed to look like it could withstand extreme variations in pressure.

The lack of the rounded carapace like structure that surrounds the necks of the males was deliberate. Since female Turians would lack breasts, and the males already have wide hips, other ways to differentiate the sexes needed to be found. Of course, a complete lack of sexual dimorphism is completely plausible as well, but we suspect that most fans would find that rather boring.
