John is pretty much me. Elhaym is pretty much Major Kira from Deep Space Nine but with a Xenogears reference instead so I can knock out two Cardassians with one Mattock.
Is your Shepard an extension of yourself? Or just a character?

Actor in a "film" I'm directing is the best way I can describe it.

Not everything lines up perfectly in the dialogue tree or the character creator, but for the most part my Shepard is an avatar both in actions and appearance.

My first playthrough of any RPG is always as an Avatar. After that, I mostly end up doing Concepts, because I like to make all of my saved characters unique.
However, I always find it hard to go Purist in Mass Effect; I used to do it alot in KOTOR but it never feels right in ME

I see him as a less interesting, less attractive, and less courageous version of myself. I play default ManShep btw.

1st Shep is Avatar, though I do take background and other things (like having Spectre status) into consideration, particularly when it comes to tough decisions which from what I can remember have been stuff like whether to let Sidonis live or die and whether or not I should rewrite the geth.
The other 8 Sheps are pure Concept built around their background and their class.
Initially two of those Concepts were meant to be Purists, but sometimes the choice ended up not fitting the intended personality.

My first and canon Shep is an Avatar. I also have two Purist Sheps, but I must say playing like that isn't much fun. Just wanted to try it out, I guess. The other three Sheps I've got are all Concepts - I like role playing =)

My "main" shepard is yes, an extension of myself. I choose the options I would choose in that situation.
My other characters are extensions of chars from diff games and such, IE Estelle from Tales of Vesperia or Kerrigan from starcraft, and even Geordi laforge from Star Trek.

I think I pretty much approach it like I would a book - I'm 'reading' the story. OTOH, there are elements, I think, which could reasonably be called avatar play. I have a lot of difficulty playing both men and renegades - I just don't like either. It makes me irritable and then I lose interest. It's not like I don't like Mark Meer either - though I don't like Vanderloo's appearance so would probably use a custom male if I could get myself to play one. I think Mark Meer's great, it's just that I can't get into the story if Shepard is not a female and if I make her make what I think of as the '****' choices. I've tried the different classes and have just about managed a paragade but that's about it. ME is, for me, a space opera with a female traditional-hero good-guy(girl) protagonist.

I like to go full paragon or renegade (at least so far). I have found that being a renegade is super fun.

Avatars: one (only one me).
Concepts: four.
Purists: two (one per morality)/
Concepts make the best careers, purists make the worst. And the avatar is the one I'm most tied to.

A fictional character or should I say 4 fictional characters. More a representation of the kind of guy I'd like to be rather than a representation of who I really am.

Each of my Shepards (or Wardens, or Hawkes) are individual instances of a character that is not me. I take RPGs as stories I'm guiding a person through. I do like each play through to be different though... class, powers, personality, etc.

I'm a concept player, I guess something of myself is in each of my Sheps, but none of them are "me". The closest thing I have to that is my avatar <-------- She's my dwarfy twin from DAO, but even she made a lot of choices I would have never made because I based her to look like me, but not act like me.

I would say I'm a mix of #2 and #3.
I always give my characters some kind of backstory/personality, but the personality is always an extension of my own, regardless if my character is male or female ( I am male ).
As such, I always gravitate towards Paragon-type playthroughs. I try to be polite/respectful, help everyone, do the right/noble thing, etc.
Whenever I try to deviate and play a renegade, jerky character, I find myself having a hard time doing so. and it's even harder to play a full-on evil character.

Different Shepards for different playthroughs. I RP them as I feel them for that particular run. Some have more, some have less of myself but none are some true extension of me. I already RP me everyday IRL. =)

I'm a mix of Avatar/Concept....I began my ME games leaning more towards Avatar...but as I have gone on to explore alternate moralities I have become something more of a Concept player...though both styles remain relfected to varying degrees in each of my games.
Though Avatar or not, my Shep's are all custom males (I'm female) and bear no male version resemblance in any way to myself....just purely designed to be what I find physically attractive.

An extension of myself. I even try to match the appearance of my first character to that of me
However, when I want to watch the difference among choices, I usually create other characters and think about the other choices (if they have a point, and, if so, if I kinda agree with them).

My Shep is nothing like me. To begin with she's female. I can't be me and a hero.
