I'd say I'm somewhere between Avatar and Concepts.

My Shepards are separate characters and don't have very much to do with me except for the fact that I created their backstories (more like filled the gaps in their backstories) and obviously their personalities specifically for Mass Effect and I roleplay them.
I never play a character that is an extension of myself in any game.

I fall into the category of: Play a main character who's the complete opposite of myself.

Or more like an alter ego, like my dark side. A person who would do thing I wish I could do, but could never bring myself to do them. But also, in a way, I kind of do see them as an extension of part of myself.

It'd be like if I was split, I'd be the good twin and Shepard would be the "evil twin" and have an appearance closer to how I see myself.

I play concepts. All of my Sheps have their own personalities which are separate and distinct from mine.

Concept here. Can't do the whole avatar thing, would keep wondering why I haven't gotten killed yet. I'd be a terrible soldier.

I play the avatar style with 2 or 3 sheps, but yet all a bit different than the rest. The other 4 are just played like option 2 and to exploit the game as much as I can.

What scares me is the folks whose Shepards are more 'avatar' than 'concept' and kill everyone who looks at them sideways whenever possible.

Avatar, can't, or rather don't enjoy playing anything else.

And would there be any purists without the morality scales?

Methinks there's a difference between "how I act in real life" and "how I would act if I was a single person on a mission to save the galaxy."

'My' Shepard is a douchebag, but a great leader. After what happened on Acuze and getting shat on in ME2, his crew are the only people he respects and cares about. On the other hand if you cross him or try to undermine him, he will beat you. Depending on what happens in ME3 he will stay that way.

You don't roleplay in digital games like Mass Effect... well, you can, but the nature of video games is so confining that it'd be like trying to work out and do cardio while in a shower. Genuine role playing is a multiplayer thing, something that people do in real life groups and on message boards.

I would agree with this.

The closest I've ever gotten to actually role-playing is table-top games like Dungeons and Dragons. Going back to games like Mass Effect and Deus Ex afterwards feels more like a choose your own adventure book.

Consept.

Avatar style could create too many WTF you idiot are saying/doing moments at first playtrough. I just create basic guideline at the beginning and then see what Shepard does.

Mainly my characters are concepts, but also I have 2 purist characters.

I've never really understood the whole idea of a character being an avatar of yourself, just seems alien to me to try and apply my personality to a character as if it was me.

Purist/Avatar.

Shepard is an extension of my own moral choices. It shows more in ME2 than ME1, usually because of the renegade interupts that I can use. Killing the batarian gunship engineer and taking a sniper shot (both Archangel mission) are two things that I would damn well do in that situation even though 'morality' wise I'm pushing near 100% Paragon.

ME1 didn't have too much of that option for me, I found renegades to be a bit too short/snappy and too much gun waving for most the part hehe!

Concepts for all my Shepards.

I work out how I think someone with each background, service history and class would behave, add in a little more imagined detail, and keep them as close to the choices I think each one would make as the game will allow.

Although my main 'canon' Shepard has a dash of Avatar in him. Not so much what I would do, mind, but how I'd ideally want a heroic protagonist to act. Of course this one often ends up simply being a question of 'what would John Chrichton do?', and acting accordingly.

Oh, how I miss Farscape...
