I like to think the Mass Effect fanbase will be more mature about the whole thing

please haven't you learned anything from BSN? i can bet there will be one that will only say "this multiplayer is dumb, it sucks, they should have left only SP"

You said there would be one. That's not a very high number. Heh.

The game is rated M, so the game will be geared toward adults. And some people get very competitive while playing, so they'll start slinging insults.

It's part of the gaming culture.

If you're playing with insult-sling morons, just leave and find a game or other like-minded players. If you're in the midst of trolls, block em. If you're being bullied over the internet, cease all social functions. There shouldn't be a such thing as being bullied via communications devices; those people can't touch you or harm you physically in any way and shouldn't harm anyone mature enough to know that you have to take 'net thugs with a grain of salt.

Granted it has been many years since I played MP where had to deal with that for most part back in CSS, then CoD4 early days plus Half Life and Kingpin, maybe original Unreal plus maybe AvP original 90's version). Back then I found the perfect solution at time for those titles was actually running own server and being admin. Someone talks smack they get smacked right off the server, fun times.

I hear it's vastly worse these days which is part of why I don't play competitively online anymore, especially FPS other than maybe occasional Quake match few years ago. Now I am a single player gamer or LAN only party with friends. Internet in general is filled with douché bags and I could see the writing on the wall back when CSS first came out and played that. Now that those douché bags have bred and the offspring have turned out worse than their parents I prefer not to play any FPS games online at all these days and only game with friends in LAN.

I do not know how ME3 server set up will be or how will turn out but I'm not buying the game for MP and if I try MP it probably will only be for short time just out of curiosity. The only title that has me interested in quite a fair amount with regard to online play is Diablo 3 and even then it's the inviting friends to game with me in my world or me joining theirs that makes it so appealing.

@biobleh: You sound completely ridiculous, not to mention arrogant. Just because someone is not up to your expectations of online gaming and/or doesn't follow your "instructions" on a game they own, you and your buddies will " verbally abuse" that person, and "make their mp experience so miserable, they will flee at the sight of your name?

Please, please somebody tell this is person just failed at Internet sarcasm. I just cannot accept that somebody would deliberately post this to be taken seriously.

There's a reason why multiplayer is usually only played by a very small portion of a game's playerbase.  You just nailed it,  any service today sounds like being in a junior high school lockeroom,  and is extremely unpleasent for anyone over the age of 14.

Which is why I find it amazing so many companies waste effort on developing a feature comparitively few will use because every game is just going to be overrun with people who don't understand the concepts of self-control and politeness,  driving off all of the right-thinking people.

There's a reason I stopped playing online with random strangers. I just couldn't take it anymore. Those kids are insufferable through and through.

Everyone saying the game is 17 or 18+ is misinformed of online play. The Halos and CoD are also intended for 17+ (ESRB rated M or Pegi 18) and there are many kids playing online. I'm talking boys who haven't had their voice change yet, but also those around 13 or 14 who are at "that age" where you just have to seem cool. Kids are playing online, and it wouldn't surprise me to find some on ME3 (though I bet most will stick with CoD). But you also have to remember there's full grown adults that also act like idiots.  Its just a necessary evil of online play I guess, anonymity gives you a certain power you don't have in face to face situations.  Just use mute or leave the match for a new one if it gets out of line, and don't take it personally.

What can gamers like us do to reduce trolling on voice chat?

The biggest thing you can probably do is just to play with people you know and trust. Even if your real world friends aren't Mass Effect fans, you can find a good group of people online. The BSN would probably be a good start. Find some like-minded and mature people who aren't into the jackassery that often goes along with online multiplayer, and coordinate your play times.

Except there is nothing 'adult' about that part of gaming culture. It is juvenile.

Actaully, I think you just failed at not being trolled. Either the guy is a comple ***-hat and should be ignored, or he is trolling and the result is still to ignore him. But it's OK, they have to get a few people to respond and validate their otherwise empty and sorry lives. Today was just your day to take one for the team. No harm, no foul.

Here's what YOU do, because you really just can't expect BW to control other gamers for you. If you for some ungodly reason decided to use ventrilo, teamspeak, etc. and encounter jerks, then...

A) Ignore/block/mute the jerk in question.
B) Just don't bother with voicechat. It's not required, and I certainly don't bother with ventrilo, teamspeak, in-game voicechat, etc. unless it involves guildies.
C) Leave the game and find people who aren't morons.
D) Play with friends you know (forgot to add this in earlier).

Join a multiplayer group of people here or on other places. Only play with friends. There's ways to get around playing with the mindless idiots online.

The BSNers that have added me as an xbox friend and I have spoken with are very nice. :wizard: Not everyone is rude or a troll. I'm expecting good things from MP.

Yeah I'm hoping I'll get a better experience with ME3 multiplayer than I do with a game like Gears of War 3. Too much racism on there so I just stopped using a headset. I'll probably try adding some friends on Xbox Live before next week for the demo.

I'm hoping on the xbox they are keeping the party chat, meaning that when you join a game, only the person in your xbox live party can hear and talk to you.

I think party chat is an Xbox Live feature, not a game dependent feature.

:o Add me, but do it soon! Bekkael is my GT. I'm up to 88 friends now and I think you can only have 100 on XBL, right?

On a vaguely related note... does anyone know if co-op will have text chat available in game on the PC version? I know most co-op games these days don't (although Borderlands on PC did.. which I was grateful for)... but it seems to be a dying trend... a mic isn't really practical for me and nor do I usually like to listen to other people using mics (I turn off that feature generally as it's usually racists, jerks or people breathing heavily into their mic ALL the time. )

It very much has its place in co-op, you rarely hear that kind of crap on L4D2.

Honestly in my experience multiplayer/online is no where near as bad as some people make it out to be, particularly on the PC...and if it ever goes bad I just mute everyone or ignore it.

Also forgive me if I sound pretentious here but in my opinion Mass Effect 3 has a reasonably more mature fanbase than a lot of other online games out there so I don't think it will be that bad (I will probably block voice chat and text chat though when I first play multiplayer in fear of ME 3 spoilers, its possible...)

Most of that type of behavior comes from kids.

I'll just venture a guess and say that not many 12 year olds play mass effect (I hope).

I'm not saying mics don't have a place in co-op.. I just want to know if text-chat will also be available as well.

I played Borderlands on PC a lot with other people (random strangers) and often had to hear people on their mics shouting or screaming into the mic either at the other players cus they weren't playing well or wouldn't do what the guy thought they should or felt compelled to shout nonsense like "Boom! Killed ya mother effer!" or some other childish rubbish...and this went on constantly and I had no interest coping / dealing with it so I just turned off the audio from their mic feeds.

Although the biggest problem was dealing with dummies who were causing feedback loops with their mics all the time or had the mic on every single time so you hear everything going on in their house, their breathing ,their eating, their game playing over your own game sounds etc... was maddening.

If I'm playing with a friend it's a different story of course as they will likely have decent gaming manners.

I also for personal issues hate using a mic and prefer to use text chat whenever possible, so I was just curious if it would be available on pc.

... besides in the very rare instances where I do play co-op games (Borderlands was the last game.. and that was probably close to 2 years ago) I like to listen to my own music over the gameplay... I'd likely not hear the mic audio from players anyway.

Anyways, I was just curious is all.. not saying there's anything wrong with Mics, just that text would be nice also.
