Easy Answer: The mute function

Hard Answer: Move to New Zealand and only play with other New Zealanders. I hear about one swear word every ten hours I play Modern Warfare 3 online.

Most of that type of behavior comes from kids.

I'll just venture a guess and say that not many 12 year olds play mass effect (I hope).

I disagree; I've played Halo, Red Dead Redemption, GTA IV, and Modern Warfare 2. In every single game, I come across a ton of 30/40 year-old men who act like spoiled little brats who just discovered "bad words". I rarely encounter stupid little brats and constantly encounter the fully-grown idiots that make me think that, rather than being dropped as a child, were punted into a ceiling fan.

I've met a ton of ~13 year old kids with a much higher maturity level than their 40 year-old counterparts; it is pretty pathetic when a 13 year-old kid can be mature and have intelligent conversations while a 40 year-old man is constantly trying to grief us going "****ing noob; nerdy piece of ****s! Haha, f***ing geeks!" the entire time >_<

Morons on your team is half the enjoyment of online gaming.

Also: Mute.

Normally, I don't mute them. If I am able to grief them, I will; and I only grief people who deserve it (like those who purposely attempt to ruin someone's enjoyment of the game for the 'lolz')

I have little experience with online gaming. Especially when voice chat is involved.

However I have heard many stories about bullying, trolling and non stop swearing and whining about some players being either playing too well or too poorly.

How will Bioware deal with this?
What lessons can be learnt from Call of Duty, Halo Gears of War, Killzone, Army of Two, Battlefield and other online shooters in terms of tackling online bullying?
Will Mass Effect 3 have it's own moderation system in addition to those implemented by XBox Live, PSN and the PC?
Will Bioware and EA along with other organisations be working together on this issue?
What can gamers like us do to reduce trolling on voice chat?

dude trust me i know the feeling. im 27 and i personaly dont own a mic because when it comes to online trash talk i know id get kicked off so i just choose to play any mp without a mic

theres always going to be trolls so my advice is to do the same as i did honestly

I'm hoping on the xbox they are keeping the party chat, meaning that when you join a game, only the person in your xbox live party can hear and talk to you.

I think party chat is an Xbox Live feature, not a game dependent feature.

It is, but some games are known to have removed this feature while playing online, the best example being CoD: MW2.

The BSNers that have added me as an xbox friend and I have spoken with are very nice. :wizard: Not everyone is rude or a troll. I'm expecting good things from MP.

Yeah I'm hoping I'll get a better experience with ME3 multiplayer than I do with a game like Gears of War 3. Too much racism on there so I just stopped using a headset. I'll probably try adding some friends on Xbox Live before next week for the demo.

:o Add me, but do it soon! Bekkael is my GT. I'm up to 88 friends now and I think you can only have 100 on XBL, right?

Alright

i assume ME3 is, despite of the current advertising, a way too story-driven game for many o' chaps considered 'trolls' in other games. that should filter a majority of them. the amount of trolling i had to see within bf3, for example, was way less than expected, just because mw3 stripped bf3 off the most annoying ones.

other than that: it's coop. coop has generally less issues with mannerisms, especially when it is against AI-opponents.

Just wait for the griefers to arrive. Then we'll see. There WILL be griefers, trust me.

EDIT: Bioware should send Stanrey Roo and Chris Priestly to monitor the multiplayer. Best maintained multiplayer ever.

@biobleh: You sound completely ridiculous, not to mention arrogant. Just because someone is not up to your expectations of online gaming and/or doesn't follow your "instructions" on a game they own, you and your buddies will " verbally abuse" that person, and "make their mp experience so miserable, they will flee at the sight of your name?

Please, please somebody tell this is person just failed at Internet sarcasm. I just cannot accept that somebody would deliberately post this to be taken seriously.

Actaully, I think you just failed at not being trolled. Either the guy is a comple ***-hat and should be ignored, or he is trolling and the result is still to ignore him. But it's OK, they have to get a few people to respond and validate their otherwise empty and sorry lives. Today was just your day to take one for the team. No harm, no foul.

My expectations are simple - to win. I'd expect people who are playing MP ALONGSIDE ME to be interested in the same thing. If not, then WTF are you playing, if not to troll? I always give my 100% when in a cooperative match, because I respect my teammates enough to not want to waste their time. If they can't or worse WON'T show me the same respect, then they deserve nothing less than verbal abuse.

Tell you what. If I'm ever in the same group as you, I'm gonna be completely unhelpful and maybe just sit back and do nothing, because I know you're going to carry me to the end. Walk your talk, kid.

Best solution if you don't want to play the game in silence? Find some friends/decent people around here(there are many) and add them, then you can avoid matchmaking as much as possible. The more of your own friends playing, the less you'll have to worry about planning to be on when they are, and it'll be the same feeling just with proper language.

Find friends or don't suck at the game, unless you plan on muting people which then it doesn't matter. Whenever there is MP you just have to accept this will happen, it will be less intense because its cooperative but it will still be present.

I recently quit playing Battlefield 3 because of the amount of rage in the chat. I also have a lot of experience with Team Fortress 2 where players have good manners if you stick to UK servers. I refuse to play League of Legends because it is apparently the worst community in the world. Even my twin brother, who is supposed to have the exact same DNA as myself, can't help but Rage in LoL so I don't want to go there.

The thing with BF3 is that I'm actually bad at that game so I feel more vulnerable, whereas in TF2 I'm a ninja spy. I assume that my ME3 skills will be pretty good since I have little problems with ME2 on insanity so I doubt I'll be on the receiving end of the rage. I also added a couple of BSN users to my Origin friend list so I bet we'll keep the rage to an appropriate minimum.

My expectations are to win too, in fact I was a seriously competitive gamer who competed in numerous tournaments yet I have never felt the need to verbally abuse someone for not being good enough. Showing dissappointment out of frustatrion is fine in my book, but verbally abusing is out of line. Usually i'd just make a sarcastic comment akin to "seriously?" if someone just failed hard.

Though, this is somewhat hypocritical of me to say considering one of my favourite times playing online MP was playing Uncharted 2 MP against a group of kids. UC2 had this rather fantastic laugh taunt where you could make your character point and laugh so I'd do that over and over to these rather loud kids after killing them. Pretty sure, I recall atleast one of them sobbing come the end of the game.

Edit: Oh... people did actively leave lobbies I and friends were playing in because they didn't like both the beating in game and verbal beating that some of my friends would give. Yeh... I really shouldn't be commenting on this subject considering i'm a horrible human being.

I find it basically solves your problems if you're playing with people from your friends list (people you've played with before, have arranged to play with, etc.), even when random strangers make up the rest of your group. Playing alone with a group of random people seems like a 50/50 likelihood of running into a bad experience. Personally, I have a hard time just muting someone who's then just going to continue talking crap behind my back with whomever other random players happen to be in the same game session. Also, I really don't want to mute the room. If I'm playing this kind of game online, I want to communicate and work with the other players as a team, meet people.

Then there are the things that make me mostly avoid MP nowdays. Most of the time, some "Hey cindercatz, you're a dumb***" type comment I'd just meet with a quick response and move on, but then you have people who are seriously doing their absolute best to ruin your day. I can't respond to that effectively online, and muting the room consigns me to basically playing solo anyway, though I do appreciate good mic-less players. That's usually how I've played Magic the last few years. Unfortunately, it's hard to make a gaming pal if nobody turns on their mic. I got sick of the bad junk a few years ago and largely quit MP otherwise.

That said, I'm definitely going to be playing mp on ME3, on 360, and I'm looking for people I can enjoy playing with, at erratic hours (I'm likely to be looking for a good game at 4 o'clock AM occasionally, so I don't care what nationality you are, etc). If anybody wants to mp, PM me. I can absolutely promise I won't hurl random insults. I'll be there for good fun. :-)

ps: I apologize if this kind of veers off topic.

When a game has a 90% troll population just muting won't make the game any better, as is the case with CoD (an awful game anyway mind, they're welcome to it)

I too am expecting better things from ME, though it depends if parents/retailers actualy enforce the 18+ rating!

This thread makes me sigh for all the games that should have stayed niche with their awesome supportive communities (and modding support from the developer mind), i'll use an example of long term degradation:

Desert Combat > BF1942 > BF2 > Bad company s*** > BF3

CoD? I don't even want to talk about CoD, but does anyone else find it terribly Ironic that the franchise was originally laid down by fleeing Medal-of-Honour developers, who wanted to make a more realistic and ccompassionate WWII game?

If there's some well-mannered n00b on my team, I'll drag his ass all the way to victory whether he likes it or not. The guy may be a n00b, but he's got manners. Those guys I don't mind being on my team, cause I can teach them How Not To Suck 101.

If it's a raging n00b who's going all Raging German Kid and not even helping our team, or some loser who's just there to ****** to the ass of his quarian engineer who he named 'TaliMAH33tr4nLW41Fu4LyF', then I'll probably tell him to GTFO in no uncertain terms and with colorful language.

Of course there are the in betweeners, and those I can definitely get along with unless they do something so stupid that I simply have to go 'Excuse me, WTF is this sh*t?!'

But then again, most of the CoD crowd switched over to Mass Effect when they heard you could bang aliens, create your very own alien avatar to ****** to, and there was multiplayer. Back in my day, Pong (the 70s original) was a two player affair, everyone loved it, no b*tching or raging in it. I still can't understand WTF is up with all the multiplayer bull.

It's co-op, so I assume most of the time people will be playing with friends.

Besides, co-op pubbing isn't as bad as people tell it to be. I've had my fair share of experience in L4D2 campaign pubbing and if you up the difficulty to the highest possible, you weed out all the trolls and newbs, until there are only the decent and above players left =]

Lesson: Multiplayer is worthless garbage. I will only play it with a friend or two of mine on XBL but nobody else and I probably won't even play it that much at all. I don't need to, I'm still doing all the side quests and all which alone will be more than enough and I'll be playing Infiltrator on the iPhone which alone will be enough if I ever feel like not doing the N7 missions which will never happen but you get it....I'll have double the war resources needed to smack the reapers left and right without ever even touching the multiplayer garbage.

There are good games which get borderline unplayable because of how shamefully unpleasant the inhabitants are - under normal circumstances you can give them a nasty lesson, votemute/kick/ban or leave the server, but there are games which get so bad that it stops being relaxing to play them.

It's probably characteristic of the new high proportion of non-geeks and dim-witted people we have empowered to play games over the last 10-15 years. There's always been a component of griefers, scary mentals, neo-****s - you name it, but now there are whole games where 90% of every server you find will be gibbering cretins, screaming children and troglodytes. That just isn't relaxing after a hard day's work - it's more like dropping by the tower of Babel than chilling out. It would suck if ME multiplayer went in that direction.

I think there's some possibility Mass Effect multiplayer might be a little bit safer than most games - if nothing else the really unsavoury elements in our community might find it hard to fit a sanctimonious/judgmental/hurtful treatise on somebody's gender politics into a snappy 5 word gibe they can shout on voip.

Two answers: Understand how to mute, and understand that undeserving pricks are the minority. No exceptions. No, not even the overrated and overhated COD. You just don't remember the quiet ones.
Besides, this is PvE, and you only need to worry about the GIFT. Oh, and those besodden fools that have got it into their head that multiplayer is less fun. I dunno, maybe they don't want to be in Garrus' position of being constantly overshadowed by another.

(it may be worse for PC gaming, however - I'm not sure.)

I was in the Army. You can offend me, but pissing me off generally involves dropping 120mm mortars into my base when I'm digging into that triple bacon cheeseburger after SnD.
