I've never used Nexus but just took a look around a moment ago. Can the nexus site present a daily digest of submissions like the vault does on the home page? I find that immensely helpful for "at a glance" browsing.
I didn't look at the nexus content submission tools, but I agree that that is where the vault was absolutely horrible. It would be nice if we could get the front end and back end of the site to be optimal though.
The "Latest files" link is analogous to a daily digest, except that it's updated immediately every time a new file is uploaded. You'll get 10 pages of the newest files. If you want a list of a specific day's uploads, you can do a search restricted to a particular day.
I have experience with the file upload system with other games, and I can tell you it's superb. Uploads are automatic, and you set the informational fields in the same way you do when you upload a video on Youtube, if you've ever done that. Files appear in the list and are available for download immediately, though you may want to set the file to "hidden" until you've finished uploading all the files and/or screenshots. You can also add links to any Youtube videos you might have to illustrate your mod, and those will appear embedded in a "videos" tab on your download page.
There are file management tools, and you can flag certain files as optional or as older versions, and others as the main or required files. Files can be tracked by users, and there's an automatically generated list of whatever updates you may make to the files or other information on the entry. Each entry gets a dedicated comment thread and a discussion area. Users can also upload their own screenshots of how they used your file, which appear in a separate image tab, and which can be allowed or deleted by the mod author.
Views, downloads, and unique downloads are tracked, and files can be both endorsed by users, and voted on for file of the month.
All in all, you have a very high amount of control over your own content.
A suggestion I'd make, so as to identify the Hall of Fame winners and other awards, would be to include a "Hall of Fame" tag that could be applied to files by moderators, so searches could be filtered by Hall of Fame winners. I say "by moderators" to make sure people aren't just adding the tag to files that didn't win such an award.
