As for SOPA actually the hysteria is because far more than just America has signed that idiot law. Try looking up ACTA (pretty much the same damn thing with another name). Corporate greed reaching ridculous levels. I respect their right to protect their stuff but not at the limit of my freedoms.

Internet would manage fine without us if worse came to worse. Now it would take a serious blow that would take years of recovery I don't doubt that but destroy the internet? Not seeing that.

The problem with SOPA came from people dragging people from their countries (for something that wasn't even ILLEGAL in said country) and expediting them to the US to charge them.

FYI SOPA's main purpose was to protect IP. Not to censor the internet. The censorship was a very unpleasant side effect of it.
