When playing Baldur's Gate 1 the game crashes when I leave an area. I get a message saying 'An Assertion failed in D;\\Dev\\Chitin\\ChVidImage.cpp at line number 1072'. How can I solve this problem

Can you try an earlier savegame. Does it happen every time you try to leave an area or certain areas only.

I have tried earlier save games with the same result. It seems to be random
as to which area it will fail. Sometimes it just crashes with no error message when trying to
travel between aread

Moving between areas involves the game reading new files which works better from the hard disk than from cd/dvd media.
Have you done a full install (custom, select all boxes, ignore the "not enough space" message) and installed the relevant patch (3 disk and GOG are patched but 5 disk set and 4-in-1 set are unpatched).
For Windows Vista & later it is best not to install to the default location. If you decide to re-install it is best to use a location such as c:\\games\\bg

Sorry Gate 70. I am using Windows 7 and have the 4 in 1 box set. Have tried the full install as suggested and located in c:\\games\\bg. Now in even more mess; Sometimes it will indicate that I have a version for the US and Canada only, on other runs I get the message:'An Assertion failed in D:\\Dec\\chitin\\Chitin.cpp at line 1360. Programmer says error initializing key table, bad key file.' I am new to all this, is it always so difficult to play a game?

It doesn't help that it is an old game with multiple media formats, a variety of patches and defaulting to a location that current versions of Windows objects to. I should probably have added more detail yesterday, sorry.
Install BG1 (disk 1).
(optionally install BG1 1.1.4315 patch here. not required if installing TotSC too).
Install TotSC (disk 2).
Install TotSC 5512 patch. I use the UK version, not sure which you would need. Don't install any directx patches etc.
The chitin assertion error is covered in the standard list but the line number is different. That possibly means you have a patch error but I'm not certain.

Problem with "chitin.key" file. First try re-patching the game. Failing that, try reinstalling.
