I always do this with every game. It is rather helpful. I do have one question though, does anyone know how many discs ME3 is going to take?

Word on the tweet beat is that it will be two discs for 360 and one for PS3. Of course, 'one for Ps3' practically never needs to be said, but I might as well. As for PC, two as well I believe.

To anyone who never did such: it's a BIG difference in performance between running via HD and directly through the DVD.

Considering I am still using the very first 12GB hard drive model for the 360, I don't have space for it. Wish I could do cloud storage but I don't have Gold either.

would be nice if installing the game on the HD would eliminate the need to swap discs.

To be fair, not everyone can do this (20GB HDD doesn't offer enough space).

But people who have 250 GBs should certainly install.

Every time I get a new game, that's what I do immediately. I spend the waiting time going over the manuals.

When there are manuals, in any case.

Oh don't even get me started on that. *Begins to rabble about "the good old days".*

I erm, actually play from the discs. I'm a serious amatuer when it comes to this sort of stuff. Awesome! Thanks for this

I see, thanks for the info. Makes one wish the 360 was bluray compatible, but oh well, disc swapping in the middle of the game isn't that bad =]

Nah, I've honestly never really taken issue with it so long as it's sparse.

It's definitely a perk for the PS3, but hey, no doubt Microsoft's next home console will move on from DVDs, so for now it's just a sign of the times.

It'd be even better if it was On Demand.  Wish they'd do it for ME2 already.

Is it because it's on 2 discs or something?  Why hasn't it shown up there yet?

Like Jeff said, word on the street is that it's going to span two disks in the same way that ME2 did. No official confirmation from BioWare or EA as of yet, though.

Indeed. Good luck to those who are still on the old 20 GB drives. Hopefully they won't have much trouble.

Yep, I had to do that with Dragon Age, because for some reason that particular game loves to freeze all the time. ME2, I had no problem running it off the disk, but it's probably a good idea to do that with part 3...

Good on you for this thread.
I usually install every game I know to be massive and it really does help.
ME2 ran much more smoothly for me after that, no stuttering or lag whatsoever and loading times were really short too. I did it with the others and I'll certainly do it with ME3.
I have a few 174GB's left anyway ;)

I install all my games too. All of them.
As was said, there are compatibility issues with a few, such as Halo Reach (although this is minor, just user-content such as replays not loading while maps are also loading - and the occasional chronic desync of sound which requires a reinstall every so often)

Besides, if some fool decides it's a good idea to put the console vertically, installation will save you shelling out for a new copy when some other fool sticks a wire out somewhere where the first fool ends up tripping.

You probably will. But that's not why installing the game is recommended. It has more to do with performance than anything.

No, you'll still need to swap discs at a given time, it just makes gameplay smoother (shorter loading times, no stuttering, etc.)

It just helps the console and the disk so that it requires less effort on both sides to run the game.

I've done this for virtually every game since I bought a 360, and it's the second reason I went with the old elite (the other, main reason, being that it was black, like 99% of the tech I've ever owned, sadly) and the 250gb Slim when that died.

It's just a normal part of gaming to me now. And gives you time to prepare for a long gaming session. Get it installing, then go to the loo, make a cup of tea, have a snack, make sure anything you'll need to do around the house is out of the way, maybe fix yourself a brandy or gin and tonic if it's a particularly fine game, and by then you're ready to go, without the worries of later interruptions.

Also, the entire experience of playing is vastly improved, so it's more than worth the ten minute delay.

I guess i should do that. My Xbox is getting old, and if i can spare the DVD drive some stress, i should do so. Not that much space left on my hard drive, but it'll do for the time being.

Well, ME2 got to about 16 gigs with both discs and DLC installed.  ME3 will likely have at least that much total.

Highlight the game on your dashboard and hit X.  There should be an option to install on the screen that pops up.
