I always do this with a game that I'm going to be playing for an extended period of time. It really does help with load times and such.

Like someone said earlier, I wish it eliminated the process of disk switching, but honestly, it's not that big of a deal, lol.

Well if it will make it run alot smoother its all good! Is there any walkthroughs on how to exactly do all this (for example with ME2) as I'm a complete noob. Sorry!

Highlight the game on your dashboard and hit X.  There should be an option to install on the screen that pops up.

Once the disk is inside the tray, highlight it and, instead of pressing A to launch the game, press X (Game Details). You'll get a few options on the game including installation. Do the same for disk two.

EDIT:  Ninja'd :D

I always do because my disc drive is unbareable (loud).

It's my second xbox 360... it was a refurbished replacement I was sent after my last one died [I swear ME2 killed it] and I hate it. After the extended warrenty runs out this month I won't be renewing it as the difference between renewal and buying a brand new arcade one with a free years warrenty is so small I'd be stupid not to upgrade. But I also realize how pointless getting a new arcade now would be when 720 comes out next year and i could save the money for that instead.

Still this is risky in that I've bought the ME3 CE for X360 and if it craps out on me I'll have to wait until next year to finish it... or have to buy it again for another platform. In anticipation of this likely cluster**** I recreated my ME2 saves on PS3 as a backup for this very scenario but it's hardly ideal. So for me not installing on Xbox is not an option. not an option.

I can't, therefore I won't.
Silly Microsoft and their 20gig hard drives.
I really wish I could though, that old first gen Xbox 360 makes a hella lot if noise.

Excellent advice. After I installed a game with my original 360 hard drive, I liked the performance so much I installed a 250GB hard drive. When playing with friends with multiple consoles in the same room the difference becomes very noticeable.

Can't you now install to thumb drives or other portable storage devices? If so, could you install the game there and even play it from there?

March 6th: get the game.

"Ok time to install. Estimate time 30 minutes? No way, cannot wait". Cancels. Plays game.

Can you do this with ME1 and 2 as well?

Is it too late if I've already played them both?

I'd REALLY like to try this...

Help on how?

You can, but note that 16 GB is the maximum size the 360 will accept even if you have larger than that. Also, USB flash drive typically takes around 1.5 times longer than installing the game to the HDD, so keep that in mind as well. (The load times are also a bit slower but only by a tiny fraction).

It's possible with any game, so yes.

On the dashboard menu when ME1/2 is in the disc drive go to game and you should have more options (x) available. Press 'X' and then 'install game' and provided you have enough HDD space or you have a big enough flash drive you can install whatever games you like but you still have to have the game in the drive and switch disks as a security measure.

Didn't they state that the game was coming on one disc across all platforms?

It wasn't an official statement. They took it back and said to wait for more info, as per usual.

I can't play any disced game without installing it first. The noise from the disc drive is annoying the hell out of me, if I don't install it.
I have to say, the HDD install option is the best thing that happened to Xbox360, ever. No noise from the disc drive, (usually) faster loading times, the consoles don't overheat as much, wich means they don't RRoD as much, disc drives also get a boost in life expectancy, game discs are much safer while in your console (if you accidentaly bump in to your console while the game is running), etc...
So yeah, installing a game before playing it, is pretty much obligatory for me.

It's too bad the PS3 doesn't have this option. I got ME2 for that as well, and I couldn't stand how out-of-sync the audio and video would get.

The X360 version really spoiled me.

? On my PS3 it says that theres an install file for ME2 at around 4 gigs. I believe the PS3 installs most games automatically when you start up. And yes, the audio was out of sync, but I find them to be only 'special effect sounds' and not dialogue, although that does happen sometimes.

I highly recommend installing as well.

For some games its almost required. Like Fallout New Vegas. :/

I'll end up deleting Fallout or such to make sure I have the room. Might Delete ME 1 and ME 2 DLC once I get my save through.

It's usually best with big games, yes. Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Skyrim, Deus Ex, Oblivion, etc. If you're going to play something like Call of Duty or Halo you made not need it but it would still be better if you do install.

I had never installed a game until Red Dead Redemption overloaded my console and caused the good ole RROD.  Thereafter, I downloaded to harddrive and it hasn't failed since. With that said, I noticed the odd graphical/pixel problems in RDR after installing .  Generally, I've learned installing equals better performance, but I don't get the impression this is the case on all games. We'll wait and hear the verdict as for ME3.

Dragon Age:O on the 360 or PS3 installed or downloaded was still a pain for the cache.

Meh, it only effects load times, if there is lag etc in cutscenes/gameplay that go away when you install, bioware should get better at optimizing their game.

I understand that some people don't if they have an older version of ps3 or 360 with a small HDD (imo ME3 will be worth it none the less), I am spoiled with my 320gb HDD on my ps3, so I would definately install it on the HDD. But I play PC :)

I know. I always thought DA:O was not very well optimized, to begin with. There were several instances of clear evidence for this throughout the game. Nothing game-breaking but it was rather noticeable.
