It's too bad the PS3 doesn't have this option. I got ME2 for that as well, and I couldn't stand how out-of-sync the audio and video would get.

The X360 version really spoiled me.

You can't install ME2 on the PS3? Really? Man, that kind of sucks. You can do so with a good number of PS3 games, as my library can attest to. Certainly not all of them though, yeah.

Could've sworn that every PS3 game had mandatory installs.

Nope, not in the least. MGS4 does, for example, but Uncharted 2 doesn't even have an install. Not one that I could find, in any case.

I was thinking on doing this for all my 360 games specially ME1 and 2. I have the slim 360 so it came with 200+GB so space is not an issue.  I was wondering though are there any downsides to this? and do i still have to put the CD in?

Any downsides would be a result of how the game in question was coded and not an error on the installation process' part. Thankfully, such games tend to be a rarity and I can confirm that neither ME1 nor ME2 have any issues tied to installing them.

As to putting the disk in, yes, of course you do (to prevent piracy).

Demon's Souls doesn't have an install, either. Lots of fun, especially when you're dying fourty times per minute trying to figure out a new enemy. I've got all load screens memorized by now.

What do you mean some cost? USB drives aren't that expensive, certainly a damn sight cheaper than buying an official HDD!

I just meant they're not quite as fast as the HDD, and the 360 will ALWAYS use 16 GB as the maximum amount of space regardless of how large your USB drive is. So if you install ME3 (assuming it's two disks) to a 16 GB USB drive, it will take up close to 90% of the total available space.

Thanks for the advice Fiery Phoenix, if I get one it'll be just for ME3 & associated game saves. Speed differences will be mostly negligible over all. I thought that ME3 wasn't much larger to install than ME2, which if I recall was around 13gb for both discs, that should leave plenty of room for DLC, at least until I can afford a 250gb HDD!

The only time I've ever done this was for ME1, which did improve the cutscenes I think. Previously it was like the textures for different things would load one at a time while the cutscene was playing. I have no idea whether it shortened load times, because I don't usually notice them. If I have the space, I imagine I'll do it for ME3 too.

I hardly ever do it and, when I do download the disc onto the HDD, I delete the game off the HDD when I move onto the next game regardless of how often I play it. Pretty much, I only ever have one game saved to the HDD lol.

Very rarely do you have to install a game mandatory from the PS3, don't know why you thought that...

I only installed one game on my HDD ever and that was Resident Evil 5. The load time was indeed quicker and the game never froze on the loading screen (which it did a few times before I installed it)

I haven't installed a game yet on my new xbox (slim) so maybe I will, maybe I won't. The whole loading times is very "meh" to me. Far as performance, I haven't had any issues with any games except Skyrim, but that's Bugmania running wild.

But thanks for the heads up and advice, its something I'll think about.

Skyrim had poor performances when installed to the HDD. Bethesda had to fix it in a patch as textures wouldn't load properly. Hopefully that won't be the case with this game.

BTW, ME3 ships with one disc for ps3, 360, and PC

Yeah there are very few games that have problem with installation. I think GTA IV did for a while but I think it's been patched. If not, then I haven't noticed anything wrong with installation.

Generally I started installing stuff when I upgraded to the newer 360 with the larger HDD. I didn't really do much installation even then until I saw MajorNelson in a video saying that it was generally a good idea because the laser and disk drive won't have to spin as much and as such will lengthen the life of your 360. That and it'd run considerably more quietly. After suffering through my old 360 roaring like a monster whenever I put certain games in it installing on my new 360 is a dream.

You can always uninstall games you no longer play or don't play as often. You can keep them if you wish but eventually you will run out of space.

When you finally have ME3 on your hands, install it to the hard drive before starting it up. (If it's two disks, install both disks.)

I know many of you plan to do that already, but those who don't, you very much should. Make no mistake: ME3 is going to be a big game, and running it straight off the disk may not be a good idea especially if you're going to be playing it for hours on end. By installing the game to your HDD you will save yourself the trouble of having to deal with potential annoyances such as extended loading times, occasional cutscene lag, and even sudden disk read errors. More importantly, your 360 will be much more comfortable running the game for hours thanks to the disk not spinning (which, in turn, contributes to minimizing the chances of potential failure on both the console's end and the game disk's end).

Once again, I am probably playing Captain Obvious here, but I also realize that there are some of you who may not exactly be fully aware of just how much trouble HDD installation can save you, so this is more directed at them. It's also a friendly reminder for those who do know that. Assuming ME3 comes in two disks, you'll need anywhere between 13 to 15 GB of free HDD space to install it, since the average disk size is about 6.8 GB for AAA games these days.

That is all. Happy hunting!

Wear and tear and noise-reduction is the most obvious and legitimate reason to install all your games, at least if you run them for hours on end. In any case you'll still need to use the discs to run the game, regardless of if you install the game to the harddrive or not.

In short: Captain Obvious to the rescue..

Great! Would be nice to get the file size though. I thought I read somewhere that the game isn't much bigger than ME2, if so, that's about 13gb.

It really doesn't matter if you still need the disk, though--since it's no longer spinning and is essentially put in there for the Xbox to recognize the software. Everything else is read directly from the HDD.

P.S. Recall that it's Microsoft and their anti-piracy measures we're talking about here. :P

I actually tweeted Jesse a few weeks after that article was posted and he said that wasn't a confirmation, so the matter is still hanging in the air.

Wait, are y'all talking strictly PC or any system (I have 360).

I know they did that for Halo: Reach. So I'm wondering if I'm just a foo and never tried it with any other games...

Yeah. I remember reading that blog. All he said was the multiplayer won't be on a seperate disc.
