Funny thing: 

My FemShep is/was a undercover Cerberus operative.

And she's a sole-survivor of Akuze.

And she's a Paragon (though with repressed Renegade tendencies).

And yet, together, it actually makes sense.



It's certainly an unusual backstory, but what it really takes advantage of is that, in ME2, you can pick-and-choose dialogue so that Shepard and TIM never claim or act as a first meeting, but rather fall into an easy familiarity. Add onto that that that Bioware so kindly left so much of Shepard's backstory, and the Cerberus operations, up to the player's interpretation, and it's surprisingly easy and effective.



Short version is that, as a Spacer-child after watching Mindoir from orbit, Shepard overheard whispers of a group which existed to prevent that sort of thing from occuring to Humans. By a friend-of-a-friend of her father's, she 'applied' for Cerberus as an informant even before she joined the military, and was accepted as an operative/mole after finishing N7.

Back in the day she was a Renegade-nationalist, but more than that Akuze was a cluster**** of an entirely un-represented alternative possibility. The colony of Akuze was wiped out, and the Alliance mission was a very, very hasty way to test if Thresher Maws were actually that big of a deal: do they just destroy defenseless colonies? Can they be brought down by modern weaponry?

A full marine detachment of 50 marines and heavy vehicals was expected to be overkill. Shepard, an adept of the highest caliber, was supposed to be the 'trump card', who could pull the unit out of danger with her prodigious biotics if things went bad. The unit was expected to take casualties, but everyone in the know expected/hoped that they'd overcome them and be minimal. The last Council-incident with Thresher Maws was a long time ago, with inferior technology.

Obvious overconfidence and underestimation saw the entire unit lost. Shepard survived, barely, with implications that she did so in some cases by sacrificing her own people. No one said the Sole Survivor survived in a heroic and sightly manner.


She was, as all Sole Survivors are, highly traumatized by her experience there... and in her own complicity in the lead-up. If anything, her foreknowledge only compounded the trauma of her own failure.


After a crisis of confidence and debating whether to quit Cerberus and turn herself in, her mother unwittingly convinced her not to, advising her to learn from her mistakes and continue as a better person. Shepard internalized that, and while making clear she would never act against the Alliance in such a way again, stayed in Cerberus... and by-reaction to her past self turned into a mostly Paragon, albeit one with (benign) human-first views and a limit on the blind faith appeals.

Afterwards, it was history. Her name unwittingly put forward to Spectre candidacy, the first Human Spectre was secretly a Cerberus operative. She was free to advance Human interests and defend Humanity as she saw best. She was sanctioned to clean up 'exposed' Cerberus cells, both to cover tracks and to throw suspicion away from her. She saved the galaxy, and even the (un-informed on this secret) Miranda Lawson conceded that Shepard did everything Cerberus could have wanted from her.



After ME1, however, working with Cerberus brought back old loyalties to the fore, as she enjoyed being able to show her 'true' faction, if not admitting it had always been such... and the disillusionment with the Council (who she only saved due to a cuncussion's effects) and Alliance for ignoring the Reaper threat has made her more desperate for survival against the Reapers, and the long-dormant Renegade has finally begun to re-awaken.
