Well I imagine their numbers started expanded significantly after shepard's death and the Alliance becoming inactive is heck lead to a lot of people leaving the alliance for Cerberus out of disgust. I imagine cloning or something like that was also involved.

no they only had 150 members in ME2, so that wouldn't be very much

uhhhhhhh

This thread has come up soooooo many times.

Well to clarify and put it simply Cerberus is made up of 3 main arms, namely; political, MILITARY and scientific (Lazarus/Overlord cells etc). Miranda mentions this to Shepard when asked about how Cerberus is organised. The Cerberus bases that Shepard took out in ME1 belonged to the military arm which has been constantly building up its resources since.

In short Cerberus already had an army well before the events of ME3 and likely before ME2.

They were not in a state to carry out major offensives like they do in ME3 though, it is explained how their numbers grew exponentially in the game.

They have excellent health benefits, higher-than-average pay, no dorky uniforms, and a good college benefits program.

about the huskified cerb troops? yeah i saw that too.  Prob refugees that cerb took and forced into service with indoctrination tech?

Possibly. Or even if they took mercs and oufitted them with Reaper tech it would explain the short learning curve for these soldiers. Don't need much training if they're fused with machines that only exist to kill.

You are on the right track, but there aren't enough human mercs out there to make up their numbers.;);)

150 Operatives, key difference. Larazrus project had one maybe two operatives on it.

Shepard only comes into contact with the scientific division during the events of ME2. Shepard destroyed a few Cerberus bases in ME1 belonging to the military division. We have simply no idea how large their military arm was back then. It is logical that TIM has been biding his time since ME2 keeping his military arm hidden. It is only now with the arrival of the reapers that TIM is revealing cerberus's full strength. (also if you have read any of the leak I don't want to know)

Well I have read the leak and I won't tell you to respect your privacy, but Cerberus was considered a small, elite black ops force in ME1 and were portrayed in that fasion until ME2.  Although the military sect wasn't featured in ME2, it can be implied that because their organization resorts to terrorist and small cell operations, they don't have the need for a large force.

ME3 being a huge war and all they needed to boost their numbers and they do some things to speed this process.

Didn't EDI say that each cell can be comprised of 50 members, and there are no more than a dozen cells at a time?

Cerberus had billions to revive Shepard.

I'm sure they had tons left over after reviving Shepard. :)

Edit: Cerbereus also has large ties to the Alliance and probably controls large parts of it, so maybe ex-alliance soldiers? or indoctirnated Alliance soliders?

cerburus went bankrupt.

Its unlikely Cerberus would recruit mercenaries since they wouldn't be vey well trained. A black ops organisation doesn't mean it is a small organisation. But perhaps the black ops part refers to the commanders who lead the Cerberus forces in ME3 the foot soilders on the other hand would take longer to build up and I reckon Cerberus has been slowly building a force since TIM's manifesto in 2165 which gives him 22 years roughly to build up his forces. All their high tech weaponry has come out of their research bases (like the ones Shepard destroyed in ME1) and also from the scientific division.

In short Cerberus has been building up for a while but it's only in the last 12 months or so that TIM has really stepped up his efforts (he's known that there was a threat out there since the events of evolution he just didn't know what untill Shepard exposed sovereign). And now Cerberus is being revealed.

Well I'll leave you to your opinion on what happens in ME3 but as incinerator said and as ME1 detailed, their cells were small and there weren't that many.  Albeit well trained they were still just a shadow force and a radical faction that wouldn't have an easy time openly recruiting.

TIM and Kai Leng took one for the team and started a concerted breeding effort 20 years earlier.

So little is known about them because they spent several years just sleeping around.

No.  They took a huge financial blow from the raids, but they did not go "bankrupt".  However, the resources retained were not enough to build up an army.  Therefore, alternative methods were needed...

They over took Omega which had a significant human pop, not to mention they had reaper tech and labs nearby. Add to the fact that some are mercs, could attribute to the non trooper numbers. Troopers can be huskified civies. I have a feeling that we will meet Aria again and find the source of Cerberus's army

Alternatively, perhaps Project Lazarus was a predecessor to some sort of cloning program.

Mercs is the simplest explanation. If that's not a good enough answer, it is dealt with in the game. While reading a preview of the Mars mission I saw a spoiler that kinda deals with this topic.

Easy.

Through funding and exotic technology, any merc would gladly join and be brain washed.

ME: Invasion hints on it. . . the tech from the collector base . . . . the Adjutant . . . you have to read in between the lines . . . but ME3 should explain totally

well I forgot, that if you think about it there are two series that has replicators - Star Trek and Star Gate, I completely forgot Star Gate till you mentioned the metal crabs. I was thinking of Star Trek but now that you mention it the replicators from Star Gate would work.
