Let's face it. The Alliance masses it's fleets over earth and it gets smashed to bits for the most part.

Well to clarify and put it simply Cerberus is made up of 3 main arms, namely; political, MILITARY and scientific (Lazarus/Overlord cells etc). Miranda mentions this to Shepard when asked about how Cerberus is organised. The Cerberus bases that Shepard took out in ME1 belonged to the military arm which has been constantly building up its resources since.
In short Cerberus already had an army well before the events of ME3 and likely before ME2.
Except the Military branch already got wiped out in ME1.

I'd argue that even with ME2 data Cerberus had thousands of people in it even then, and with the war they recruited quite a few more people with military training.

So how'd they build all those star fighters, heavy cruisers, mechs, guns, armor, and bases?
In just... like... three months?

As for bases, they already had them, that's not surprising really.
In regards to mechs and infantry numbers. How many Ymir mechs did Shepard fight in ME2? 20-30 at most? How many enemies in total? Less then a thousand, hell I'd even go so far to say that the total number is not higher then 600.

The loss of which was apparently no big deal.
Same with the derelict Reaper team, Overlord team, Lazarus station team, and the countless bases, spies, and front companies lost in Retribution.
Just imagine how much bigger and stronger Cerberus would be in ME3 if none of that had happened.

From what I understood, most of their resources took a hit in ME2 to build Shepard and the new Normandy, and then Retribution saw them take yet another massive hit from a bunch of turian strike forces that damn near crippled them. Now in ME3 we see them with a big army of the best soldiers with the best gear, strongest mech robots, fleets of ships and shuttles, the ability to seemingly just show up and deploy their forces without issues, etc.
They've basically gone from "already pretty unbelievable unless every alien race is both blind and stupid" to "completely unbelievable."

that they're essentially a overfunded, overpowered group of supposedly covert humans that nobody can seem to find despite the fact they plaster their insignia on everything,
The Galaxy is a very big place, just wanted to point that out.
If you want to take about unbelievable then talk about how the Alliance is a superpower in the Galaxy.

Retribution seemed to be setting Cerberus up for a smaller role in ME3. Perhaps one where the player could choose whether or not to be hostile to them.

How were the fans supposed to know what the writers were writing? Who among us but the minority would even want to look at the leaks let alone believe it true?
Game developers don't ask fans for their versions of the script and what they think should happen, they go in the general direction they've been going, get their OWN writers on it, and tweak bits and pieces with fan input. No matter how bad you hate the writers and the direction of the game, its THEIR game THEIR process THEIR franchise.
When you get hired to be a writer for a game then you can make the decisions and make it all perfect and driving for both sides of the morality spectrum. Until then, you'll just have to deal with the fact your most disappointing choice of a franchise to at one point like is getting its third game released on March 6th 2012 and a lot of people are going to buy it, a lot of people are going to be ok satisfied or love the game with its flaws, and that you are going to be in the same spot you are now.

I am asking a lot by expecting critical thinking skills from my peers. I should probably ask for something more realistic.

You can't spend that much money and have nobody notice. You can't build that many ships, that much equipment, and have nobody notice.
One ship, okay, if you are careful and take your time (and Cerberus did). However now they've got dozens of ships, maybe more. Big ones, too. They've capital ships.
That's crazy.

Oh is this the part where you break down a person's post, ignore the overall point to make yourself sound better and think you are a whiz when it comes to Mass Effect and BioWare and EA's business? No, I'm pretty sure you are just another troll who is still butthurt enough to roll around on these forums while doing absolutely nothing productive.

As long as you stay away from those asari strippers, yeah. Otherwise you do wind up bringing something home...
