horrible Lags/Freezes

I have a 60GB model ps3
Latest firmware (update ran just this weekend)
PAL (australia)
30GB+ of free HD space
hooked up via HDMI and my games seem to choose a graphic setting automatically (is 1080p in the home menu but after staerting a game it changes to 720p)
I have not noticed a generally slow framerate as other have suggested, BUT I get regular horrible lags and freezes. At certain points (usually during combat but I have seen it during a conversation) the game will freeze and will take 30 seconds to a minute to recover - and sometimes doesnt recover at all. This causes me to have to throw the hard power switch on the back of my machine as the rest of the controls become unresponsive. I have deleted everything from my system and re-installed but the same issues persist. This is a major issue for me as I lose game progress and it can't be good for my system either.

Could this be a corrupt disc? All my other games work fine so it isnt my machine.

I really like the game so far, but havent been able to complete the origin story as I keep getting these horrible freezes, and need to restart the system every 20 minutes.

As an aside - I also get a message saying I have been disconnected from EA servers without fail after about 5 minutes of play. Not sure if this has anything to do with it.

I have same lag issues. No freezing in-game BUT now I can't even load the game. Go figure...these same issues happened with Fallout 3. Why can't games like these perform like they're meant to be experienced?

EDIT:
Deleted my options file (NOT THE SAVED GAMES) and it loaded after that.  As a side note, what's the point of having a game copy function if everyone copy protects it?  I can't even back up my newer game saves in case my HDD crashes.

bump.

I changed the option to the minimum resolution my tv is capable of (around 570p, and damn does the xmb menu look ugly now) and there is no improvement.

Upon paying attention to the actual frame rate, even on this setting I notice "frame skipping" in the opening cutscene (and the rest of the game for that matter).

This isnt my main concern though - my concern is that the game freezes and becomes unresponsive - as in frozen completely - not just slow.

Is anyone else experiencing this? If it's just me I will take the game back and get a replacement disc.

Same problem here. Hard freeze during a loading screen. I'm going to make a new thread about it.

 Good Afternoon everyone!

I too was having some lock-ups and freezes playing Dragon Age: Origins on my PS3.  After several hardware resets through the morning, I decided to pay attention to some events while playing the game, and noticed that it would normally freeze when the music changed.  I went into my game options and turned the music all the way down.  After that I have not had one single freeze or lockup.

Greg, from EA tech support asked me to post my message I sent them about the fix I discovered!

Hope this helps everyone experiencing the lockups!

I have read about the PS3 firmware update that has been causing Dragon
Age:Origins to freeze and lockup. After this had happened several times, I
started messing with the game settings. I went in and turned the music in the
game all the way down, after that the freezes have stopped so far (at least for
the last 45 minutes or so). I started playing the game a little after 11am EST.,
and right away had 3 to 4 lockups/freezes. Again when I turned music all the way
down in options, the lockups stopped!

Hope this helps!
