What everyone else before me has said, what's wrong with having game modes for those that cannot play games well or those who do not want to make the important decisions in the game and let the default ones slide?
It's not like the game suffers for it, and it's not like the game forces you to choose a mode that does not fit you.
You still have the option to play the game normally as a RPG. There are just two extra modes in addition.
Sheesh!
Nothing is wrong and it's a video game.
Video Game.
People can play it as they want, maybe enjoy it, maybe not enjoy it.

I'm gonna laugh when ME3 fails along with SWTOR and DA2
Yes, look at how badly this horrible, horrible game is failing:
*shameless snip*
And how many of those preorders are from people, who don´t have ME1 and ME2? You spam that image everywhere. Even average husk like me can figure out, that lots of people will pre-order ME3, becouse they have played previous games.
The game is (about) doubling its previous pre-orders. Therefore it's not failing. What's your point?
My point is, that people want to see the end of Shepards story, so pre-orders might be larger part of total sales, than average game has.

Agreed.
What if people have already played the game like 10 times, and want to do a run or two focusing only on the action?
Having that option would be nice.
Or people who have a borderline opinion on roleplaying games.. it could be a nice gateway for them to play the action mode and then gradually build up to the full RPG style.
More options does not mean dumbing down.

...and therefore it's not a failure. Were it a failure, people would let their outrage over petty changes to game mechanics outweigh their desire to see the end of the story, and PREORDER CANCELLED BIOWARE.

Kind of like people did in ME2 suicide mission. They played it on instane and didn't get any of the mods just to do it.

Oh no! Bioware are giving us more options to play the game as we want to and to appeal to a broader market without removing any of the content their established fanbase are used to???

exactly! and i have played both games of 1 and 2 around maybe 60 times total and even i am like ok something new needs to be added.
and whats interesting about the 3 modes is its all OPTIONAL meaning it gives the player a choice to what they want to do and not automaticly set and feel forced.

While I know everybody is entitled to their opinions and some people will enjoy the mode I do share the OP's concerns. Several people will probably just choose "action mode" without really understanding what it is, just becuase it sounds cooler and is the first option in the list.
While it probably is just alphabetical order, a nagging voice in the back of my head is saying that action mode comes first becuase Bioware are trying to aim for that market above the others. That might just be an overly cynical look at it though.

The only problem I have is that if someone new to Mass Effect might pick Action mode first since it's at the top.
If people can't read the descriptions of the game mode, they probably won't want to read dialogue options either. Thus Action mode is perfect for them!

To all the people saying it's "additional" content, it's not. Taking out a feature of the game and calling it a "mode" adds nothing to the game- it just lets you choose to have less content.

Seriously, deal with it. It is in the final game and the mature people realize that their gaming style is not the only one out there and their style isn't the only valid one.

I do think that with the name - which really sounds more positive than "RPG" .
It's amazing how many RPG fans think that everyone hates the genre.

^^^^^^ that was awesome!!!
I always think its important to maintain just little perspective.
As for the topic, I see no problem with it. I think it's an excellent compromise. Bioware has an established fanbase that in many cases goes all the way back to Baldur's Gate (I'm not one of them BTW) and they did aggravate many of them by taking out so many staples of classic dice based RPGs in ME2.
However, they did it for a very good reason; it is more profitable in today's industry. I can't fault them for that at all.
So, I see it this way: Bioware needed to shift to more action to maximize its success BUT it also really wanted to give its longtime fans what they wanted. Shooter fans, arguably the largest demographic in the current consumer base, weren't familiar with RPGs. Long time turn based, stat based, classic RPG element fans in many cases don't really enjoy or know how to play shooters (they go hand in hand to an extent).
By going with this system, they satisfy both groups (potentially) without alienating either. I think its actually a great, and very ambitious, idea.
