“In salarian politics, ‘I love you’ means ‘you’re going to die,’ and ‘you’re going to die’ means ‘I love you,’” one Linron staffer said.

I'll have to remember that for dialogue wheel moments.

This.

I don't think she'll say something like that to a Spectre. That'd be dumb.

I'll remember it just in case though.

Dont take it literally.  Its a saying meant to illustrate the level of scheming, deception, doublecrossing and misdirection in Salarian politics, that sounds like it rivals that between the Chapterhouses in the Dune series.  Plans within plans.  Like they could be smiling to your face, showering you with praise and future plans, all the while knowing you're drinking poison as they speak.  Or two Dalatrasses could engage in a very vicious, public feud to hide the fact that they're secretly allying against a common foe.

It sounds like dealing with the Salarians has the potential to be very interesting.:D

Hmm... potential for conspiracy and intrigue on Sur'Kesh.

I look forward to the possibilities.

Great look into salarian internal relations. Happily, it matches quite well to what we know about salarian external relations. As for the "love you/you're going to die" line, I interpret it as being indicative of salarian politics. If someone, especially a rival, is being all polite and friendly, they're probably looking for a place to stick a knife. OTOH, if someone tells you "hey, that spot on your back would be a perfect place to stick a knife," they're probably on your side.

Remember, Mordin teaches us that salarians have a really good sense of when they're lying to each other. They probably have rather elaborate social cues designed to mask why they're hiding a particular secret that doesn't have "you don't want to know this" stamped in bright yawning neon. :innocent:

I can see Dalatross Narra being the traitor for the Salarians. If you have seen the beta Garrus says, "Cerberus got here too fast, they must have been tipped off." That can so be a powerplay for Narra to assassinate or at least weaken Linron's influence in Salarian politics.

Well this one threw me off a bit, trying to figure out how this article connects to ME3 lol

I'm guessing (wildly, my favorite hobby) that this is going to be a Dalish/Werewolf sort of decision between the two rivals groups of salarians.  Each side will have its own strengths and weaknesses.

I'm thinking depending on your choice you get either the full salarian fleet or part of it and the STG.

I'll take whichever side turns into werefrogs in combat. Image IPB

I wouldve liked to know how the Salarian political system worked probably before reading that, but nvm.

I'm always open to more species characterization. Fleshing out the culture of the salarians makes me VERY happy. They were all kinda generic in both games, with only two salarians that actually stood out.

It's a little better than that as far as salarians with individual personalities:

Salarian Councilor
Kirrahe
Ganto Imness (the prisoner on Virmire who isn't brainwashed and insane)
Anoleis
Chorban
Mordin
Maelon
Ish
The various "working class" dudes on Thane's recruitment mission.

I don't think most of them can really count for species characterization, didy. Personal characterization, to a point, but most of them aren't cast as being a stand-in representative of any larger group from a narrative point.

I mean, I see your point in that there were more than two, but as far as expanding the conception of the species as a whole (yay stereotypes), the Salarians don't have many.

Then again, neither do the rest. Liara and Samara were hardly representative of Asari Society, while our only personal Turian friend is a self-admitted 'bad' Turian.

I was disagreeing with the specific claim that only two salarian characters stood out.

I see your point. I guess it's subjective to the extent of what you consider 'stood out' to mean, but I definitely see your point.

Actually, I thought the two best looks into the salarian race was the background "three drunk guys and a stripper" and the quest to retrieve the lineage data.

Especially the latter was a good look into how involved breeding is for the salarians and how it shapes their society...

Turians are the ones that are all over the map IMO. Supposedly most of the spectres historically have come from the Turian ranks yet both Garrus' father and Executor pallin who are "good" turians according to Garrus, despise the concept of Spectres....

So we have a race that are known as "people of action" and have long filled a role that requires individuality and working outside a structured environment yet the typical turian would hate the idea of spectres...

Confusing (although this is a good thing as it means you can't place a hat on the race easily).

iirc - SB has a dalatrass in her pocket - wonder if there is a connection or plot link. and as far as species characterization, so far (not counting comics etc.) its only humans, quarians and krogans we've had in any detail...[wistful resignation]...elcor ambassador shuffles slowly off camera...
