I'm stunned at these facial animations I'm seeing in the demo and not in a good way

The problem is NOT that the animation got worse. It's that the graphics got sharper and as a result the animation (that we've seen in all the previous games) are starting to stick out like a sore thumb.
No, it's that the cinematography and body animations have become more dynamic since ME1.

There can't be an in between because Mass Effect has realistic facial models, Uncharted is slightly exaggerated. And by doing so, Naughty Dog managed to avoid the uncanny valley while making faces obviously human (and pretty damn similar in many cases to the character's VA) without making things look awkward and managing to get realistic facial movements.
The more human it looks, the static and unemotive it looks.
I decided to look up Uncanny Valley because I didn't know what you meant.

These images are scary. I'm going to have nightmeres. Nothing in Mass Effect series or Uncharted series is this scary. The facial annimations whilst not perfect are not this bad.
P.s. I'm going to have trouble sleeping. Thanks.

Bioware has said that they would be improved for ME3, so this really shouldn't be happening.Savber100 wrote...

It's easy to compare with games like Uncharted and LA Noire and forget that this is another type of game entirely. Yes, it would be awesome if Mass Effect was in par with games like Uncharted and LA Noire when it comes to facial animations. With todays technology I think that would be too time-consuming when it comes to games the scale of a Mass Effect game. In it's own league Mass Effect is superior to other titles.
I'll admit though that it would be really interesting to hear an honest answer from a dev if the facial animations in ME3 could be improved even further or if the engine limits the facial animations to a certain level.
As I've stated multiple times, I don't expect it to look as good as Uncharted but there should be no reason why it appears to look worse than ME2.

I'm not buying that excuse anymore with less than one month from release.izmirtheastarach wrote...
I will reserve judgement for the final game. Since the demo is basically the same build they've been showing for months, I don't see why anyone would assume that it is final code.

So... yeah, perhaps the demo is an old build? It is a demo after all lol.

AlphaJarmel, I tried to address that very impression in my previous posteverything else improved, and the animations are sticking out because of the way they are done.

It's very possible that it's full on Uncanny Valley or even just contrast however it sticks out and I'm worried how detracting that this is going to be in the full game. Nothing much, if at all, can be done about it at this point so it's really just criticism that Bioware can take to their next game.

The demo is old. When I saw the demo leak and after a certain explosion Shepard had no cuts or bruises to his face. When I saw in the trailer, Shepard has blood and cuts and gashes across the face.

You get the same cuts in the demo. Also I think I remember reading a tweet where they were finalizing the demo less than a month ago(probably closer to two weeks ago).

I'm not sure how they are doing the facial animations or if they possibly changed systems but I will wait and see the final product. I know with some tools like facefx, you can run the audio through to give you a basic animation automatically and then an animator goes in later and touches it up. You can see this auto-generated animation if you watch people talk who are just in the world and not in an actual conversation, or even your squad mates saying a line during combat.
So I hope thats the case and the final game has a better pass on the animations.

I have heard one of the devs say that facial animations are one of the last things they work on, though he was referring to DA, so it might be different here.
I've heard that too but this is the demo, it's not like it's a beta. Still hoping for the best though.

If you don't like it so much don't buy the game nobody is forcing you to buy it anyways...
Dude, we're not saying it'll ruin the game experience so much to make it not worth buying. We're justing pointing it out as a concern. Something that will take away from the impact of the cinematics somewhat if the characters lack appropriate facial expressions.

And you'll still be playing the game anyway
That's not the point.
It's not even close to the point. The BDF has no sense.

I don't think anyone would expect ME3 to look like Uncharted but I think that many of us unconsciously compare new installments of the ME-series to recent released games involving a lot of dialogue as well. Just that we have something "better" to compare with makes us look back at Mass Effect scrutinize it. More than we've done before, our expectations are higher.
It's difficult to say if the facial animations are improved in ME3, I have to see it for myself. I haven't seen anything that reveals that it would be worse than ME2. ME2 could be really stiff from time to time as well.

I haven't played the demo yet, but from what I've seen sometimes the facial animations seem pretty good, like when Anderson says "Consider yourself reinstated, Commander" and when Shepard is leaving on the Normandy, but some others look terrible.
There was another one in the hallway that I thought was good which was the line, "So that's why they took my ship?" Femshep's face on that was very appropriate.

I've been wondering something about Mark Meer. His ME1 performance gratted a little to me, but improved in ME2. Has he improved some more in ME3?RideshLive wrote...

His portrayal of emotions has definitely been taken up a notch, in some instances (I say "some instances" because I don't know the whole script).
