I'm stunned at these facial animations I'm seeing in the demo and not in a good way

That should read BDF not BSN.

Eh no. It should be BSN, cause BDF make more sense then the whiners here.

I'm not sure that acting like a sarcastic jerk makes me part of the BDF. Wouldn't I just keep arguing until the end of time if that were the case? I just like to argue. It's fun. For the last few pages, we' ve been arguing about demos in general, which is not even the topic of the thread.

That's definitely what it seems like to me. I've never understood the fascination with defending or even disliking something with such determination.

I don't think I was doing either of those things. I think I was giving up the argument because I don't care enough to keep having it.

Jreezy, you said yourself a page or two ago that you don't have to be satisfied with every aspect to still be interested in a game. That's all I'm saying. All I really care about is gameplay and story. If those things are missing from ME3, well then we have a problem.

Facial animations have never been good in ME. I dont see why it should be different here

Mmmm. All these Uncharted comments make me want to play that gorgeous game. Hand animated faces done right.

ME has rather stiff animations, but not bad. I don't find them distracting from what I have seen.

I couldn't help but notice Jane 2.0's facial animations in the new trailer were awful, particularly the part where she's talking to the Defense Committee. But Sheploo's looked just fine in the leaked beta demo.

Either way, "sub-par" facial animations aren't going to be a deal breaker for me. The animations on the other characters' faces seem fine.

People always hold up Heavy Rain as one of the worst emaples of uncanny valley and I just don't see it. Maybe it's because the facial features in HR are so detailed that even slight inperfections seemingly break the imersion but i've never experienced this and I would to this day put Heavy Rain way up their with L.A. Noire and Uncharted. Am I wrong in this?

Heavy Rain facial details are so good to me that imo you would only notice imperfections in facial movements during video and therefore uncanny valley wouldn't be evident in stills.

People say that about Heavy Rain because in screen shots, they do look wonky, while in game they look normal. I can think of a few in heavy rain that stood out as weird, but not as many as in ME2. There were allot of derp faces in ME2. Miranda was probably the worst offender.

It seems the closer you straddle to edge of the uncanney valley the bigger the margin for error and when a game is almost there 95% of the time the few genuingly jaring moments stand out so glaringly bad [by comparison] that an otherwise incredibly consistant [pretty cutting-edge] game in this regard can get a bad rap over facial animation. Whilst devs who don't push the envelope anywhere near this far get off lightly. I think that's why ME2 animation looks 'better' than ME3... the facial animation hasn't kept up pace with the added detail in other areas and now the animation/engine is showing it's age and if they haddn't pushed so hard across the board maybe the animation wouldn't stick-out so badly.

It's not that bad. Far from the best, but it gets the job done and really shouldn't be distracting. As long as it's on the same level of ME2 I really couldn't care less.

Ok thankfully someone uploaded video so I can point out particular examples.

Shepard's response seems completely off compared to his lips.

How could the facial animation get worse? I don't get it.

Ya... ya that seems pretty bad... Botox face syndrom for sure.. Just puppet mouths moving up and down..  But only during some scenes, others look fine, like Ashely talking..

Oh well.. I was hoping for better but I guess they rushed through the "story" and "RPG" aspects of the game so they could concentrate on "action".

I'm really hoping I won't be looking away during most of the convos now..:crying:

Yeah... I should just get the hell out of here while I still can so I don't just start noticing flaws in the game that wouldn't ordinarily bother me. <_<

The expressions look good to me for the most part, though the lip synching is off.

Having watched some of the demo on youtube I can see what the OP means, but its not really any worse than it was in DA:O or the other ME games, it just stands out because the graphics are better and I suppose because I was looking for it.

Okay. yeah. I see what you're talking about. It's got an old kung fu movie feel to it.

Perhaps, it's just clunky synching on the demo. Hoping that will be fixed. For real. It's distracting as hell.

edit: the expressions are okay to me. But the lip synching is definitely off.

LOL that does look pretty bad, sorry bioware. Although, it looks like the audio might be slightly out of sync, for me at least. Still, it looks like there's hardly any lip/mouth movement :(

I really don't get it. Sure lip sync is off at times but it is definitely not worse than the first two games.

A far more worrying thing about that video is how Shepard says a whole lot of things automatically.

Me neither. If anything it just got me even more excited, as if that was possible, to play the damn game.

Normally, I would say "Graphics in no way matters or has any say in whether the game is good or not" but I will admit that it would be a little jarring to play ME1, then 2, and then play ME3 and come to completely different facial animations and graphics.

That said, I still wouldn't worry about graphics.

While the facial models look better than ever, the animations seem to be the worst in the series.  There's very little if no emotion in any of the animations and it seems at times that the lip syncing is off.  I'm using Femshep and I'm wondering if Sheploo is better because this is very bad.  I'm aware that the animations can't be at Uncharted levels due to technical issues but there has to be some sort of inbetween as this falls way short.

Based off Kingoms of Amalur, from demo to final game, I wouldn't worry. The demo build for that was 3 months old and apparently they'd spent thought three months on nothing but facial animations because the ones in demo to in game are lightyears apart.

I'm trying to find it again but I saw a vid w/ an imorted...or face coded Shep. I think. It was a custom femshep. and the synching was really off. I'm wondering if it's the code import thing. Or the CC.

Idk, but Sheploo's doesn't look that bad, but this other one was a lil strange.

Hmmm. I'm hoping and thinking it's prolly sum BS that's not gonna show up in the final.

right?

Just got to build a better shep really....I rerember in ME1 I made a shep and it looked good and then I saw his cheeks were clipping. From the footage of ME3 that I've seen facial animations are all good.

Yeah, I just watched the full vid and it appears significantly more polished than either of its predecessors, despite minor flaws. Varied animations, gritty graphics, and top notch voice acting.
