I'm stunned at these facial animations I'm seeing in the demo and not in a good way

Just got to build a better shep really....I rerember in ME1 I made a shep and it looked good and then I saw his cheeks were clipping. From the footage of ME3 that I've seen facial animations are all good.

Yeah, you know, that's what I"m thinking. Cuz I did A Shep in Me1..a few times lol. And in game her mouth moved really goofy. I had to reload. I couldn't take it.

And maybe I'm just tripping. I looked at that other vid again..and it didn't seem so bad anymore. maybe I've been looking at these things too much today. lol

Just finished playing through the demo, and they weren't that bad. I mean, they're not as good as L.A. Noire or Uncharted, but they were easily on par with what we saw in ME2, which was pretty good.

The only thing that threw me was that Shepard never seemed particularly shocked by the Reapers' arrival. Everyone else looked terrified, but he just looked on rather grimly. I know Shepard knew they'd arrive eventually, but to actually see Earth come under attack would still be a bit of a shock. But otherwise I felt the facial animations were pretty good.

Nooo, actually, it's the demo. www.youtube.com/watch @ about 8:00 mins in you can really see it. lol

I mean, their mouths are moving and they're no words coming out. lol.

It must be the demo cuz all these vids, even the beta didn't have this. We woulda noticed.

So, yeah...

I saw a live feed of the demo (when the stream was strong) and the facial animations were REALLY good - probably the best nuance I've seen in all three games.

I agree. Aside from some lip sync issues, I thought they were pretty good.

While I was playing the demo I didn't notice it much. While you're playing I doubt you'd notice it, unless you were actually looking for it. Lip syncing sucked though.

Damn, I missed that one.  I wonder if it's an audio synchronization issue.

The facial animation I can deal with but I wish the characters didn't have the running animations of a Gekko.

ITT: People implying ME2's facial system was a dance on roses.

After all, it gave us gems like this:

The running animation is the only thing I don't like about the new mechanics. It just looks ridiculous.

I agree, they should run more like the jesus lizard.

Yeah but two things;
1) There are only a couple of faces that are bad - and its the same ones being shown all the time.

2) Those faces show more movement and animation than what we've seen in ME3.

The facial animation does seem pretty bland - it just doesn't have much life,

I just played ME2 and it didn't seem anywhere near this bad.  It's possible because of the higher rez facial models the animations are just appearing worse.  Regardless, something in future games from Bioware needs to do something about this.

I think its just the disconnect in the relatively high res facial models that look decent when not moving. But their animations or "digital acting" or whatever they want to call it haven't caught up to the fidelity of the models. So you end up with animations that can't hold up their end of the bargain.

The lip sync being off is what bothered me the most. Not sure if it was playback issue or what but I really get annoyed when lip sync is off. Also some of the body animations look a little wonky, but then again Bioware isn't exactly a god of animation.

Well, from what I've seen from all videos it's like the past 2 games, which is fine. There's Uncanny Valley of course but I can handle it. The Witcher 2 is MUCH worse than both Mass Effect games and it didn't stop me from getting immersed and enjoying the story.

It's kinda tragic that for facial sync + expressions in a game, Half Life 2 is still the best.

8 years and no advancement.

Haven't you seen L. A. Noire? :police: Untouchable in terms of character expressiveness. An inspiring step forward.

QFT, along with VTMB.. Source engine games have always had the best facial animations and lip sync imo..

True, but the actual body models looked like paper cutouts with half the joints a normal person has.. made for a strange mish mash of great and terrible..

I just watched a tiny little bit from those youtube videos and I'll have to HARDLY disagree with the complaints. It's not so bad, it's not nearly as bad as you describe. I'm like "what the hell is wrong with you?" It's like past 2 games. Lack of lyp sinc? Wtf? It's there! English is not my primary language and I can tell they're moving correctly or very close to, to be fine with it when I play.

I don't get the complaints.

You know what. I'm wondering now if it's the translation effect. It seems the mouths/lip synching is voicing it in the other language w/ dubbed in english.

Lol I think that's what it is...lol

I feel derpy.

I blame you. Alpha. You lured me right into this abyss!

I'm pretty sure most of the lip syncing is just the audio being off from uploading it, there is no way BioWare would make a mistake that is so noticeable.

I think it's because it's a demo , willing to bet things will be better in the final game.
