What needs to be explained?
It makes sense to have a smaller squad and it makes sense that not everyone will have the same "screen time" or roles (I don't know what else to call it) as certain characters.

Bioware doesn't owe you anything.

And I grow tired of this elitist attitude from the fanboys. The OP is simply inquiring as to why the squad is getting the cameo treatment. While it's quite obvious, what right do you have to tell him he can't ask that question? Get off your high horse.

And plus ME3 isn't about the characters anymore - ME2 relied on these characters for storytelling (it'd be a dull game without those loyalty missions) as the plot in it was non-existent. Also, if you think about it, you only recruited those characters for a single mission (i.e. the Suicide Mission) and they've served their purpose.

Garrus is obviously because "meh, we brought him along this far" and Tali is because of fan service.
I'm pretty sure I remeber bioware saying Tali was fanservice. Originally she was meant to have a smaller role, but they decided that the fan out cry would be too big.

Hey there ExtremeOne!
What's your thoughts on Miranda getting the cameo treatment in ME3?

The official explanation is coming soon. It's called Mass Effect 3.freejaffanation wrote...
I wouldn't mind some official explanation. Right now they're just acting like ME2 was a 30 hour side quest. I think that's much worse than the OP's inflated sense of self entitlement.

Because there are waaaay too many characters in ME2 to give them ALL the level of character development they deserve. They could have picked only a few to have as permanent squadmates but that would have angered the fanbase of those characters which didn't get picked.

You make a really, really good point in my opinion. The whole purpose of recruiting them was to stop the Collectors. Mission accomplished so now you need a different set of allies. I used to be upset but after reading this, the only thing that still upsets me is the L.I.'s not being squad mates.
