I can't stand Batarians and kill them every chance I get. But maybe that's because the developers present me with Batarian terrorists at every opportunity. I'm sure there are nice Batarians in the galaxy, but I haven't found them.

Some might call this racism. I say they are wrong. It's speciesism.

First person to call it speciesism.

Not all Batarians are racist. THat's the problem with this thread. You can't judge an entire race on the actions of a few, just as in real life.

So true, You should see some of the replies I get when I say I want the aide of the Batarians for the final showdown. We need all the help we can get....Despite killing 300,000 of them lol.

I'd really like a quest to recruit Batarian aid. That would take some serious diplomacy.

BTW, I wonder if the Hanar will be pissed Shepard offed the Enkindlers...

Well...one of them ssid the enkindlers are what they call the protheans and so far, shep has not offended the protheans nor the hanar.

*ME2 SPOILERS*

The Collectors used to be Protheans. They were indoctrinated and altered by the Reapers. Shep pretty much wiped them out in ME2. That was actual genocide, although it's presented more as a mercy-killing than anything.

Us, the squad mates, the normandy's crew and EDI know that, but the hanar don't.
also, the collectors were helping the reapers, so they technically count as fallen enkindlers (or fallen ones).

I don't care what race a person is.
If he's nice to me, I'm nice to him.

Im pretty sure the Hanar would consider what the reapers did to turn the protheans into collectors as an unholy abomination.  That knowledge might even be enough to launch them off onto a crazy holy war to release the enkindlers from their torment.

The Asari annoy me for the wink-wink-nudge-nudge we-aren't-women-at-all sex appeal race thing they have going on. I might have bought it for novelty's sake had it been a race of Manari, but as it was? The Asari definitely missed a huge potential culture-issue by having Asari react to Asari-Human similarity. Given the Asari taboo on Asari-Asari relationships, the visual similarities should have easily given rise to unease about Asari-Human bonds..

I like this.  This is a massive, unused opportunity.  I could easly forgive the fanservice nature of asari if there was more of a "WTF??!"  reaction on the asari's behalf to suddenly running across an alien race that looks so much like them(they are the older race by lore)

Maybe an extranet news blurp about the catholic church flipping out over an asari researcher hypothesising a common ancestor.

or maybe an overheard conversation along the lines of :   "yeah, the females are pretty when they shave that fur off their heads.  But the males are just so...   creepy.  Like some kind of mutant asari from one of the cheesy old horror vids we watched as children"

little things like that would get the asari off my annoying race list

I like this and I agree. A huge, missed opportunitty. SOMEBODY should have been a bit weirded out by it...

I despise batarians. They're the only species in the Mass Effect universe who have absolutely no redeeming characteristics. Practically the only thing they're actually good at is Epically Failing.

It could be as you say, that every batarian you meet is a slaver or a terrorist or both and hence you get a bad view of them.... but everyone's gotta hate someone :P

Liars, back-stabbing, ugly and cheating race. If they could reach an agreement with the Reapers they certainly would have sold their mother only to save their own skin. I hope they die in ME3

But the volus are really useful. They're the reason why the economy in the ME verse is doing well. Plus we can't let them die. I need them to do my taxes.

Or maby the asari think that humans are the only race that isn't ugly because we look so much like them.
Either way I agree, a completely missed opportunity. I don't even remember reading about asari first reactions to humans in the codex.

Quarians, I don't care if they feel they've paid for their mistake they still haven't learned anything from it. Any race with a learning curve that bad needs to die.

i don't hate them but i disagree with the Quarians outlook on things, they should just start to colonise a new world already, the only thing the'll get from the geth is death

Good point. I hope you're right!

Re: Batarian hate -- I don't like their culture at all, but that doesn't mean I have to hate their entire species. To paraphrase Kaidan "they're saints and jerks, like us." It's true that just about all of them have been jerks so far, but I'm hoping we'll have the opportunity in ME3 to find some Batarians with redeeming qualities.

Re: Asari not being weirded out -- maybe they are but they're just too polite to say so in Shep's hearing.

It's Mordin's recruitment mission. The Batarians are threatening Mordin's assistant, who they suspect of speading the plague. Shepard can negotiate to get them to release him. The after conversation goes something like this:

Batarian: We released him, can we go now?
Shepard: *holsters weapon* We had a deal. You can go.
Batarian: Huh. Human nobility. Never thought I'd see that. *leaves*

I hope this and helping the sick Batarian has some influence over events in ME3.

Ah, okay.  I recall this now.  However, that's an example of a pleasant, level-headed Batarian?  Just because he didn't shoot me in the face at the sight of me doesn't mean he wouldn't stab me in the back in my sleep.  The fact that he shows surprise at human nobility doesn't make him any less likely to grab a bunch of them in a slave run and/or wipe a colony of them out by dropping a meteor on them from orbit.  Be that as it may, it does show the slightest glimmer of hope for some sort of salvation for the Batarian people.  Will they have enought time between Mordin's recruitment mission and the impending Reaper invasion to change mine and/or the universe's opinion of them?  Probably not.  I certainly wouldn't mind being surprised, though.

I think it's less the Batarians convincing us they're good than Shepard convincing Batarians that not every encounter needs to end badly. Paragon Shepard... winning over hearts and minds since 2157.

I expected most of the replies to be Asari due to the whole space babe thing.

For me it's the Krogan. There is just so little to them.

Let's look at the races:

Asari: art and culture oriented and business oriented with some big ships for defense
Turians: war oriented
Krogan: war oriented
Human: war oriented
Batarian: war oriented
Quarian: war oriented
Volus: don't know much about them... merchants are all we see
Salarian: science oriented
Elcor: merchants but we don't know much else
Hanar: religious oriented but just as corrupt as everyone else
Whatever Krios was: don't know much about them
Vorcha: vermin

Aside from Asari and Salarian, I just don't see many redeeming qualities out there, and among those two there are just as many problems as among the other races, so not many redeeming qualities among any of them. So, I just think we should blow up the Citadel and every single Mass Relay in the Galaxy and be done with it. Shepard could do that. Shepard is good at blowing up stuff. No more Reapers, no more galactic civilizations, done. The radiation should take care of the rest. I wonder if there's a button somewhere in the Citadel that does that?
