Top 5 Favorite Video Game SOUNDTRACKS
#1

1. MechWarrior 2 series (31st Century Combat, Ghost Bear's Legacy, Mercenaries): over 15 years and it still rings in my ear. I've heard a lot of good sci-fi-ish soundtracks, but for me, this one reigns supreme. The first track I listened to in my first ever mission, Silent Thunder, still resonates its jungle vibe, and sounds fresh every time I listen to it.
2. Mass Effect: no surprise there. Mass Effect's mix of synth and orchestra really did it in for me, having that epic, space opera feel while feeling much like a game at the same time. I especially love the Blade Runner-ish feel and the similarity of the soundtrack and atmosphere of the game to Deus Ex, another all-time favorite, and no other game has made me feel the same way about Deus Ex. As a whole, I still think ME is 2nd place on my list, but it has the one single best music track I've ever heard in a game: Virmire Ride.
3. Deus Ex: another long-time favorite. The Deus Ex series as a whole, I think, has excellent music and sound design (even Invisible War, but no one talks about Invisible War), but none so good as the original Deus Ex. Memories of Hong Kong, Versalife, the Paris Catacombs, the Vandenburg tunnels, and mostly the Ocean lab UC complex are strong because, incidentally, the background music in those levels were my most cherished.
4. Sins of a Solar Empire: when I first bought this game, I didn't know what to expect. This is one of the few times where I experimented with a genre other than run-of-the-mill shooters and RTS. I really enjoyed it to this day, and the amazing soundtrack was a bonus. The Vasari and Advent tracks were especially enjoyable to listen to, and it's the one RTS I've ever played in which I rarely favored a faction over another.
5. Sonic Generations: a mix of everything I ever loved about the Sonic franchise. They even managed to get the modern Sonic gameplay right this time, and the music made it all the more sweeter. I especially liked the remixes of Sky Sanctuary, Seaside Hill, and Spagonia's Rooftop Run.
Those are just my favorites. I'd like to know... what are yours?

I love you. O.o
But I'm gonna have to add Assassins Creed in there. Jesper Kyd is a f*cking genious. Hans Zimmer is also amazing.

- Final Fantasy IV Celtic Moon
- Music From The Divinity Universe - Limited Edition Soundtrack
- Valkyrie Profile Arrange Album
- Jade Empire Original Soundtrack
I limited my choices to owned soundtracks with the highest collection of songs I appreciate. The sad thing about most OSTs is they only have a handful of outstanding tracks. The rest end up mediocre or forgettable. The Chrono Cross OST is a good example of that. Also, five choice is freakin' torturous. There are others I really wanted to include and decided not to since I don't listen to them as often. Ah well.

Neotokyo- amazing soundtrack for just a mod of a game.
Cthulhu Saves The World- I like how the music seems to revel in its... generic-ness? Not sure how to describe it. It feels very fitting for such a tongue-in-cheek game, though.
Nitroid- never played it personally, but I watched a raocow play it.
Super Meat Boy- former OC Remixer breaking into the industry, neat.
Assassin's Creed series- apparently Jesper Kyd is pretty amazing.

Shadow of the Colossus- It fits the feelings of everything going on in the game very well.
Okami- Same reason as SotC it just fits great.
No More Heroes 1 and 2- The music comes off very video game-like and it works well.
999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors- fits well for the story and puzzles.
Ace Attorney series- again it just fits really well.
If you can't tell by now I like the music to fit the game well.

- Mafia (1, not 2).
- Gothic 3 (especially that guitar song which played in that orc controlled town on a cliff overlooking the sea).
