After that my memory is too clouded and confused. Max Payne 1&2 featured good atmospheric soundtrack and some nice launch and aftermarket songs.

A kindred spirit! Tell me, what was your most favorite track of them all?

Oh, Can't remember. There were a couple of Jade Falcon missions, desperate battles in desolate places, with very moody music of cold and bitter beauty. There was some like that I sticking in my mind. But the way I remember it, all missions had great sound tracks. And that's why I listed it.

ActRaiser: My favorite video game ever! I know I have this game on a pedestal, but ActRaiser's soundtrack is AMAZING. I will fight this to my grave, ActRaiser has THE best stage 1 song in any video game EVER!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2: I love this soundtrack. Emerald Hill Zone, Chemical Plant Zone, Aquatic Ruin Zone, Casino Night Zone, the special stage music, the Final Boss.

Mega Man X: When I first played this game, and Central Highway started playin I felt like a total badass and I was ready to fight anythin that came my way.

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior: Grew up in the arcades, playin this game. That's all I can say, through 21 years of remixes, ports, and re-releases I will always remember the orignal CPS1 arcade game.

The King of Fighters: My favorite video game series has had sooo many great themes over the years. I can't name all of them nor from which game they came from. SNK has always been better than Capcom in the soundtrack department.

Notable Mention

Mega Man 2: One of the best soundtracks on the NES... well yeah. But I just love Crash Man's Theme I can't help but hum along to it. Puts a smile on my face :D

I don't generally pay much attention to music. For me, it usually just kind of fades into the background while I'm focused on the game's combat/puzzles/dialogue/whatever. Its one of those things where I'd probably notice it more when its either bad, or not there at all.

Having said that, the first Witcher game had a soundtrack so awesome that even I paid attention. The combat music was loud, fast and intense, the cutscene music was appropriately dramatic, the tavern music was quirky and "bouncy" (technical term?) and the two rural towns (chapters 1 and 4) had some peaceful daytime music, and eerie nighttime music. It seemed that every piece of music perfectly fit the mood/atmosphere of what was happening on screen at the time.

Honourable mentions:
Fallout 3, which must have made an impression on me because I purposely turned on the radio while wandering the wasteland.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA for the awesome, which is a nice little indie game about free falling through obstactle courses. The music is quite varied and it usually seems to fit the intensity of the action.
Killing Floor - loud and fast, describes both the music, and the gameplay.

1. World of Warcraft - I played the game for 7 years and I never turned the sound off... kinda miss hearing it... No...NO!...MUST...NOT....RESUB....ARRRRGH!! Must Listens: The Shattering, Grizzly Hills (theres multiple tracks, all are great), Elwynn Forest-Cataclysm (This one always hits me in the nostalgia bone...it makes me think of all the great times the game gave me).

2. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Dark game, dark music...but oh so awesome. So awesome that it could make an omlette sprout legs and massacre a family of corgis for being too delicious. Must Listens: Oath to Order, Song of Healing (and Unhealing...Ben Drowned), Last End (The Final Hours Song), Deku Palace *Note: All of these songs are 100% just as awesome orchestrated.

3. Mass Effect - Another instance where the music was never 'off', it always fit. Combine the great orchestra with the best credits song ever, and what can I say? Its supertasticwtfbbqamgsoawesome. Must Listens: Mass Effect Theme, M4 Part 2, Vigil, FInal Assault.

4.Kingdom Hearts - Holy mother of cheese, the music in this game was amazing. It matched the mood of the game perfectly, and is, in my opinion, the best music Square Enix has produced (sorry Final Fantasy fans ;D) Must listens: Hikari Kingdom Orchestra, Dearly Beloved, Simple and Clean (love or hate it)

5. Minecraft - I still remember Calm2.ogg playing during the night as I wandered aimlessly, desperately trying to find my house again. It made me sad to think that, as a brand new player, the house I had spent hours working on would be forever lost. I ended up losing that map file when my laptop took a dump...part of me died then :(
Must Listens: Calm2.ogg (Clark), Calm3.ogg (Sweden), Piano2.ogg (Wet Hands), Piano3.ogg (Mice on Venus)(When I hear this it always reminds me of when I found my house again, after a pretty long search)

edit: Fixed ranks ;p

Hard to think of many off the top of my head...
The original Silent Hill was good with a wonderfully creepy opening and changed the mood at the end with it's happy bouncy number (while showing "outtakes" of the cast)
I know many people disliked it but I enjoyed most of the tunes in Ridge Racer Type 4.
Don't know if it counts but the first Crazy Taxi worked well for me..(the sequel tried too hard and ended up as a poor imitation)
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was good while playing the game (though not so good out of context) especially the bit where you constantly heard a woman saying that there is no hope just eternal damnation.

There's some underground game I always had a little soundtrack crush with on it .. Like Titan Quest. The soundtrack fit the mood of the game so well . Subtle yet Epic . Nice Balad.  Remind me of Diablo but more at the other spectrum .. The positive side of it.

Just like the game.

This is in no order and like Filament just some recent obsessions.

Shadow of the Colossus- It fits the feelings of everything going on in the game very well.
Okami- Same reason as SotC it just fits great.
No More Heroes 1 and 2- The music comes off very video game-like and it works well.
999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors- fits well for the story and puzzles.
Ace Attorney series- again it just fits really well.

If you can't tell by now I like the music to fit the game well.=]

great game and music, love the little music part after you kill a colossus very touching ...
