Are the Mass Effect games too long?

Bioware released some interesting statistics for ME2 which I read on Rock Paper Shotgun, and the data suggested that half the people who started Mass Effect hadn't completed it. The news was posted by RPS on a September, so people probably had a good 6 months to get around to finishing the game, or probably more.

I wonder why that is? Is the game too long for peoples attention spans? You think that maybe if Bioware released Mass Effect in episodes that more people would complete the series? Like suppose if Mass Effect episode 1 was Eden prime and the citadel, and then each major planet was an episode each to be released one month at a time do you think that this would work? Each of the planets were fairly self contained. They all had their own main story that had begun when you landed and concluded when you were done on that planet, so I think that it's doable from a narrative point of view.

then what could be causing the problem if not game length?

Go look up stats on some other games if possible. ME2's completion rate was decent. Frighteningly enough.

Yeah, completion rates are really quite low for games in general.

Well episodes have been done before by developers like Valve and Telltale Games. Telltale have been doing it ever since the Sam and Max episodes, so it can't be bad for them if they're still doing it. It lets people just pick and choose whatever episodes they're interested in for a much lower prices than $60 and ignore the ones they don't like.

Why should Bioware change their way of making games, just because some people are too impatient to complete a 20 hour game? It really isn't Bioware's fault.

BioWare doesn't care if people finish their games, they bought it. They don't have any reason or incentive to get them to finish.

This might sound shocking to people that hang out on a game forum, but a large majority of casual gamers never finish games. They just don't have the time, drive or patience. One of the reasons MP FPS's sell so well (besides most of the world have horrible taste) is because casual players can sink an hour or two a week of multiplayer before going on with their inferior, non gaming obssessed lives (I kid I kid).

Most people in general don't finish their games. Bioware is lucky to have the 50%, and that's regardless of their length.  There's people who haven't completed Call of Duty campaigns, and those are games you can beat on accident.

You asked for a reason for the episodic content model, I gave you one. I'd be interested to see if this could work in a Bioware game though where it's written with the assumption that everybody will play through the whole story. Sam and Max been an adventure series was a very story driven game too, but it didn't have the complications of Mass Effect such as McGuffins like the beacons which were required to advance the plot. So I guess Bioware would need to rely less on plot devices if they made an episodic game.
