NEWSFLASH TO OP:
ALL video-games have an average completion rate of 50%, not only Mass Effect.
It's only completely normal that only 50% of all players finish Mass Effect. It's like that with ALL video-games. It has been like that for years. It is in fact the very reason why many developers these days make shot(er) games.
Now tell me OP, would you honestly want Mass Effect to become shorter, just because the majority chose not to finish their game? Does that mean all games should become shorter? Does that mean the games also should become cheaper? Or do you think we should get less content but still pay the same price?
How do you go from "splitting the game into multiple short pieces" to "less content overall"?

If anything, I wish in some cases that they were longer! Don't get me wrong, ME 1 and 2 are plently long as it is. And you'll be hard pressed to find a game with as much depth and content. Most games nowadays can be knocked over in an afternoon. ME requires at least 50 hours to get all the content and levels on the first go. And that's playing it on novice level.
I'm not saying cram as much content as you can in there. It has to be a proportionate amount of difficulty as well and things need to be properly explored. A game like ME has to be long. There's simply too much content for it not to be.

If they made ME shorter it would be rubbish-bin worthy.

tetris, I don't know where you got the idea that ME needs to be shorter, but I hope Bioware doesn't listen to you.

Nah this thread has a dumb premise, but I wouldn't say he's trolling like usual.
If Mass Effect were released in a bunch of episodes, it would lose the grand epic feel of the game, and likely wouldn't have a huge effect on the completion rate. Most people who don't finish the game, at lleast that I've talked to, had complaints about the gameplay and said it's just not their type of game. As much as ME3 will try, no game can be all things to all people. Although this idea may have gotten more people to finish "Mass Effect episode 1" Most of those people who wouldn't have completed Mass Effect, probably wouldn't have started a hypothetical "Mass Effect episode 2"

then what could be causing the problem if not game length?
Have you considered the possibility that all games follow this model? All the time, people start games and never finish them, decide to start replying them and get bored, etc. It's not a problem exclusive to Bioware games. Even if you were to take my favorite games of all time, I probably have more unfinished runs than I do finished and that's for any number of reasons.

And some people just don't like RPG's, they don't realize they need to level up and upgrade gears and stuff. When they get weak compared to enemies, they get frustrated and start hating the game.
And like Jreezy said, play Skyrim! I'd say that most people don't finish that game, even after 200 or 3 times that in gaming hours. Like it was with Oblivion and Morrowind. People spend some 1,000 hours in TES games and do not finish it.
I'd like to see some ideas to improve a game, not to dumb them down. Ideas like those ended up giving us DA2 which, while a good game with wasted potential, is a piece of **** compared to Origins and other great fantasy RPG's.

Nope. It never felt artificially elongated to a point of frustration, up to and including the ME1 side quests. Are the Mass Effect games too long?
Bioware released some interesting statistics for ME2 which I read on Rock Paper Shotgun, and the data suggested that half the people who started Mass Effect hadn't completed it. The news was posted by RPS on a September, so people probably had a good 6 months to get around to finishing the game, or probably more.
I wonder why that is?
Not everyone has the gamer hunger upon that purchase. People have lives, and can end up forgetting about the game. They could get sick/hospitalized or otherwise unable to play it. Or some people just ragequit. It could be a million different reasons.
