Does anyone know yet how steam handles the promo codes for items/DLC? Do they send you an e-mail? just wondering if I should be worried yet if they haven't sent me anything.

Nobody will send DLC codes prior to release day.

My assumption is that the promo codes will be tied to the game like CD-keys are.

Promo items and DLC *should* already be in the game with the Steam version, IIRC.

Promo codes are tied to your EA account. And I believe it was said are done on an in game interface. I'm guessing on the title screen when you log in to your EA account. And not through Steam.

As far as I've ever heard, you have to download them the same as everyone else, through EA.MrGOH wrote...

Yes as far as I know this is true. The only code "tied" to your EA account when you first begin will be the DA: Journeys codes which you logged in to get. And none are tied to the game like a CD key.

I'm assuming it will work something like most workings of STEAM I have been forced to bear mute witness to: horrendously. But hey, at least we get to play the game, right?
