So why should they quit now?

To take a break and make a different game, even another Fallout but possibly something else (another Terminator game?)

They have released (again, not counting expansions, DLC, nor "mobile" games) seven TES games over the last decade and a half - that's just under one very two years.  If you look back at the "glut" times (late 90's) the games there were releasing were fairly bad (Battlespire, Redguard) ... and the LONGER gaps between games (especially, say, when they do a DIFFERENT game and get to experiment in said game, like Fallout 3 brought some great stuff to Skyrim) meant a better game released.

I didn't realize the thread titles was "5 Video Games Franchises That Should Take a Break" with the invisible sub-title "unless I like the series" :P

You list Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed but they are selling very well and gamers, as a whole, love them.  Why stop when there is increasing demand?  The last Call of Duty, MW3, alone sold more copies than ALL TES GAMES COMBINED.  Yeah, THAT'S a series that should stop but Bethesda should keep making TES games because it's "picking up steam"....  Bethesda has a long way to climb (or CoD a very fall way to fall in sales) before you can make THAT kind of argument.

I have and have played all CoD games. My call for a break was made with the intention to protect the franchise. And to protect the value of the franchise. The point is that CoD is losing "it". My impression is that this is a fairly widespread opinion. The fact that people like me are still buying them, doesn't mean we are entirely happy.

That OTOH is not true about TES. TES is still fresh, well made and gaining lots of new fans. Now if you're saying that by taking a "break", you mean that Bethesda should continue to manage the series carefully, then we are in agreement.
"To do other games" means they need money. TES provides that money. Ideally, because TES is gathering market strength, an entirely new game in the series shouldn't wait too long. But there's hardly any point before new consoles are out. Otherwise it's impossible to refine on Skyrim/FO3.

As much as I like the Assassin's Creed series... I have to agree that after AC2 the series started to lose my interest. I still haven't finished Brotherhood for the fact that I'm bored. And no offense to Ezio because he is a good character, but to have him in three games one after another it's like.... why not just make it one big game or just two big games? The AC series gave me the impression that we would go through different protagonists in different eras. Not to mention, Brotherhood really did feel like an add-on to AC2.

Sonic, Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Call of Duty. I'll just add Dragon Age, Civilization, Medal of Honor, and Halo, .

Err, the original Halo came out a year before the original Battlefield did, was massively successful and influential on just about all subsequent FPS titles, and is a big part of why the market is now "saturated" with FPS games to begin with. So calling it a "Battlefield wannabe" is preposterous.

Just thought you ought to know.

This.

Not that I blame the developers for continuing to churn new games that are nearly indistinguishable from the one that preceded it, so long as people keep spending money on them. If you've played one COD game you've played them all.

This is crap. COD 2, WAW and MW1 have completely different missions and all 3 are great games.
MW2 and B.Ops ruined the series though.

I firmly agree about Assassin's Creed -- the second game in the series was a great leap forward, but Brotherhood (while good) didn't do much other than improve the combat, while Revelations added basically nothing but vestigial mini-games. I don't know if they need to take a break so much as they just need to slow the hell down and take their time re-designing a sequel. I'd love if they would make it more like the Thief games with a reduced emphasis on combat (since combat has always been AC's weakest point) and an increased emphasis on stealth and clever escapes.

But realistically, most of the series suggested in this thread are way too successful and make way too much money for their developers for them to ever slow down. Only a precipitous drop in sales could cause a company like Ubisoft to take a step back and reevaluate their plans, and even then probably not.

Nah, I think they should take a break but only in a sense that they should really take the time and come up with an AC game that takes the series to the next level. AC2 did a good job with that but when it came to Brotherhood and Revelations they felt like add-ons to AC2.

Realistically yes. But then again you can also tell when a series is starting to lose its quality and doesn't try to do something new and different (such as Zelda -yes I know fanboys will kill me for this- ). Will they still make money off of it? Sure.... mostly due to the fans who will support the company regardless. But that doesn't mean a company shouldn't take a step back and think that maybe they should set the series aside for a bit and try something different (or really spend the time thinking of how they can re-revolutionize the series).

I don't necessarily agree on Assassin's Creed, mostly because the writers wrote themselves in a corner with the 2012 storyline.

I don't think Sega neeeds to take a break from Sonic, I think they should license the franchise to someone who knows what they're doing. Retro Studios, anyone?

Yep, played it on PC and it bored me to tears. It felt really bland, mostly because I had seen this gameplay before. And also it became really overhyped and the amount of sequels they pumped out for was ridiculous.
