Thane, Samara, Mordin, Legion, Jack and Miranda were all good squadies. Garrus and Tali are also great even if their roles in ME2 were less interesting then in the first game. Grunt, Zaeed, Kasumi, and Jacob while interesting in their own rights did not really add much more then a few extra missions.

That's just opinion though.

I much preferred all the ME2 exclusive squaddies to the dull characters of ME1. Forcing all of ME1 squad back upon me severely gets on my nerves, especially as they've abandoned any character variety in the squad too.

And I preferred the ME1 squad and didnt like having the new shiney squad "forced" on me.  But I learned to appreciate them.   We all have our opinions on favorite squad members/makeup, they can't please us all.  Just play the game and enjoy the story.  :)

Me2 mixed in some ME1 squaddies with new squaddies. Now they are forcing entire ME1 squad back in and not putting any of the ME2 exclusives in. A tiny squad with little variety, full of characters my Shephard has little time for is clearly going to affect my enjoyment of the story.

Wrex and Liara weren't part of the ME2 squad. Only Tali and Garrus.  I don't understand what your problem is since they say you get cameo's from the ME2 squad.  I definately would have preferred Kaidan in my game in ME2 (obviously) but still liked the game just fine, eventually enjoyed the ME2 squad and didn't complain about it.  And if that last sentence is supposed to be sarcasm you're kinda proving my point.  They shouldn't have big an impact that they affect your enjoyment of the game.

A few notes:

Why are they still introducing new squadmates (like the Prothean guy) when most of the ME2 ones are going to have reduced roles in the game instead?

My dream squad consists of:

Ashley
Kaidan
Wrex
Garrus
Tali
Miranda
Mordin
Zaeed

Or something.

Yup. I'm okay with that team, will give the new guys a chance to prove themselves. And since my faves are back in action (they got sidelined in ME2 after all), I'm happy.

I like the ME3 squad personally, but then again, I've never really hated any of the characters.

Because new squadmates can't be dead before the game starts, they would have to put too many resources into the game and maybe couldn't get it out in the 2 year development cycle they seem to have going.

Yes ME2 offered 2 characters from ME1 and a wide variety of other characters to choose from. Yes it didn't have the other ME1 characters and fans of those characters did complain. Me2 exclusives are getting cameos in the concluding part with no promised payoff in the next installment as there isn't one.  The third game doesn't even have one of the ME2 exclusives on the squad and worse still the squad size has shrunk hugely, leaving little variety. And of course squaddies are going affect the enjoyment of the story as they are a huge part of the experience.

Just where the hell are ZAEED, THANE, SAMARA, GRUNT, JACOB, MIRANDA, and even LEGION.

Obviously, they fight better alongside Shepard, rather fighting lonely on some planet or space.

They should not get removed, because some people think ME1 squads are better.

As a person who had to suffer through the ME2 cast of supporting characters and watch his ME1 favorites reduced to inane cameos that forced my hero to use lines that made him/her sound like a moron, I simpathize. Now if the game comes out and becomes a HUGE hit while your favorite characters from ME2 suffers, then you'll TRULY know how I felt.

Here's BioWare's problem:

They put too many squadmates into ME2. As awesome as many of them were, squadmates like Zaeed, Jack, Kasumi, Grunt, Thane, Samara, Jacob, etc, were completely superfluous. They added nothing to the storyline and were just there for the sake of being "awesome", because ME2 didn't really have much of a story to tell, only small subplots. Many of them had half-baked backstories and even less intriguing personalities. Furthermore, many of them lacked character development, and come off as flat and uninteresting towards the end. I don't feel emotionally invested in any of the characters I've listed.

I rather BioWare kept most, if not all, of the squadmates from ME1 in ME2 and introduced only a few new ones they know they will invest the proper writing resources to make them as three-dimensional as possible. Squadmates like Miranda, Legion, and Mordin are excellent examples. They were well written and integrated with the storyline incredibly well.

And now, since ME3 will be incredibly plot-heavy once again, BioWare is axing these characters in favor of focusing on how the galaxy defeats the Reapers.

Zaeed is doing what he does best. Taking merc jobs.

Thane is on the deathbed in ME3 because of his illness. Fighting alongside Shepard is probably not a good idea.

Can't blame Samara for staying on Thessia to help the innocent, like she should.

Jacob and Miranda are being hunted by Cerberus and one of them has a even better reason to not go with Shepard, which I won't reveal.

Grunt is the leader of a krogan elite commando team on Tuchanka.

Legion is a geth. Naturally, he went to the geth collective when things got rough, since he could probably do more work there instead of waiting about six months with his thumbs up his ass while Shepard is spending time in the brig. Don't think the Alliance would've taken kindly to more illegal AIs either, so it was probably for the best.

Thats basically what I think they should have done 3 ME1 and 3 ME2. Just replace wrex with grunt since wrex is leading the krogan. No more "I AM KROGAN" Image IPB just " Yo, does this ascot make me look gay" or" Hey check out my [insert bulging muscle here] Im so pumped right now" sigh.

Listen, Im fine with the me1 squad coming back even though I prefer most of the me2 squad but there is a lack of balance between the two. At the end of me2 all I could think about was how awesome its going to be when the alliance crew interacts with Miranda or Jacob and they see that not all cerberus members a bad and blah blah blah. Just some interaction between the two squads.

Not to mention the lack of a sentinel if kaidan is dead.

But alas its a missed opportunity.

Even though I've been confused myself, most of the squadmates from Mass Effect 2 do not return in your squad for the following reason: they only agreed to help Shepard on the Suicide Mission...After that, they'd eventually go their separate ways...They were there only for that mission...Now, friends of Shepard on the other hand, like Garrus, Joker, Liara and Tali, of course they would return...

Liara and Tali are the two ME characters that aren't friends with any of my Shepards, reason - I don't like them.

The ME1 squad only joined Shepard to stop Saren because they were in the right place at the right time (except for Liara).  I'm pretty sure that had Shepard met Thane, Samara or Jacob they would have been willing to join up for that mission too.  It's also likely that the rest of the ME2 squad could have been persuaded.

Well, at least Grunt has no excuse to leave. Does he?! Nevermind.

But I still think some of them can remain on Normandy.

Meh my Shep's pretty meh.

As long as he can tell them all to f*** off when they start asking about his feelings and isn't forced to be buddy buddy with them he's cool.

He'll miss the ME2 squaddies but at least they're doing their own thing and not all up in his space.

So yeah that's how I'll deal with it. 2 spots for Garrus and Vega/Prothy and my Shep'll be good. Hopefully the VS and Liara's annoying asses won't be on his squad for more than one (or two) missions each then they can wait on the ship.

Bioware was in sort of a lose/lose situation here. Since they couldn't include every previous squad member, and everyone has different favorites, someone is going to get pissed off either way. Personally I am very happy with the squad even if it isn't perfect.

2 questions:

How big of a part does Mordin play in ME3?

What happened to Grunt?
