Is it still possible to holster weapons?

I wonder what has taken priority?
I'll give you three guesses.
Okay!
Lets see...
1 - Combat rolls
2 - Switching cover
3 - Unique melee kills
I choose these based on memory usage for unique animations - and they are not in me2. Melee kills seem to look awesome, but the gears of war esque movement stuff i would do without over holstering. But thats assuming i am right. I noticed the developer post pointing to ram limitations on consoles - i would've totally sacked the other features over this. But oh well
It is a bit weird though in one particulr regard - ive seen interviews where they talked about level design, and they wanted to change it up with less predictable battlefields ie. chest high walls everywhere. But this seems to undermine that pretty hard - if your gun is out, its forced, and you know a fight i coming up! Kinda makes all that effort pointless, at least in terms of predictability.

It just occurred to me... I'll no longer be able to rotate the camera around in any areas that have battle to get those great shots of my Shepard standing there face-on with the two squaddies just behind them and the scenery in the background, etc.

Yep say goodbye to pretty screenshots, especially since in ME2 the areas with the best backdrop and lighting conditions for taking screenshots were also battle zones.

It really does, doesn't it?
I for one could definitely do without the combat rolls if it gave me the option to holster my weapons back.
Then again the devs have said they want the attract the Gears crowd so it doesn't surprise me they've done everything to make the movement system familiar to them
Still the worst thing is that this will cripple the PC version too when there's absolutely no need for it there.

Does Shepard at least lower his weapon (to a tactical/at-the-ready carry) when engaging in conversations with people in combat areas so he's not pointing his weapon in peoples' faces? This is important to me... (haven't played the demo)
I believe it's said that he does, but that still won't allow us to rotate the camera to enjoy the scenery or take pretty screenshots.
It also remains to be seen how annoying ME3's at the ready animations will be.

Yea that is bad news - is it confirmed to be omitted for PC - or just speculaton at the moment? Im bound to the 360 for me3 but would actually buy a capable PC if it meant a significantly better me3 experiance - and i'd consider this significant!
Im not a huge fan of features dissapearing from games - i remember in dragon age 1 the back button would bring up a newly discovered codex entry wit a little prompt in the corner of the screen. That dissapeard in da2 and subsequently found it a freaking nightmre trying to locate new codex entries to the point where i stopped reading them, and missed out on a ton of lore.

Edit: Was being sarcastic - although if the demo comes out tomorrow and we have a holster function - I will post a picture of myself wearing drag.

I hope this isn't an issue for the PC version...you know..since its not a port and they've built for all three platforms simultaneously.
Something like this was probably discovered quite early on, and was kept out of the build for a significant portion of development. It's a design decision derrived from a technical limitation. Combat zones probably haven't been tested at all for collision, navigation and such while in holstered mode. Not that there would necessarily be any problems, but this was likely something decided on very early on.
Depending on how this works in the game (PC here, so no demo yet), there might not even be a controlled holster animation or function at all, instead relying on purely scripted scenarios to lead in one zone to the other, or just basing it off where you land.
Either or, I'll be very, very surprised if modders are able to brute force it back in, given how much of a pain ME2 was to mod, and BioWare's choice not to release any development tools. It's a damn shame though, for a multitude of reasons, and it's funny, but of all things that might or could bother me about any decision made across all three games, this strikes me as the most bizarre and disappointing. No more full body shots, vistas, or anything like that. Everything seen from a narrow, confined FOV and Shepard taking up a quarter of the screen.
Damn you consoles!

Couldn't they free up the camera / allow us to free up the camera outside of combat without holstering the gun?
Even that would probably be enough - locking on to the back of Sheps head will irk me no end.

We could holster weapons when there weren't enemies around in ME2 and they removed it from ME3? This better not be a console limitation. <_< I mean, 2-4 MB...hardly a problem for the PC.
Yeah, it's really disappointing.

I kind of already cheated - since the picture is already in my album - so I figured I couldn't really lose either way!

That could also work, though still being forced to have your gun out will still limit screenshots, but you just know they're not going to give us any more control over the camera in combat scenes on the PC version either, unless this is in fact already in the X360 demo.
Unless I'm wrong and you can already move the camera around even with your gun out. Can anyone with access to the demo confirm if we get more/better camera control in combat in ME3?

i think the simultaneously created builds

paperwork needed to keep track all these "tiny" details that is
different between the XBox PS3 and PC builds, yea not going to
happen
ME1 and DA:O both had plenty of such tiny differences between the PC and console versions, but yeah, not going to happen in ME3.

Damn. The memory issue is a perfectly valid justification, but unfortunately it furthers the 'Combat Mode' mentality that I didn't like about ME2. Creating a 'Designated Combat Zone' kind of breaks the feeling of continuity between exploration, dialogue and combat.
Very well said!
To my previous post I wanted to add though, that it's probably not that trivial to mod the option in. If the animations are never loaded, you'd have to change that first. It's not like just adding a key-binding or anything.
Also, thanks Icinix for offering another incentive for BW to put this into the PC version.

Well, I'm sure we'll still be able to go into flycam mode and disable the HUD via .ini editing, so at least there's that.
Disabling the HUD won't be enough if Shepard is always pointing their gun and facing away from the camera.

Even then you'd still have Shepard stupidly pointing their gun in all nice screenshots, which is annoying in and of itself.
And a good enough PC could easily load all the animations anyway so there's no reason to cripple us just because the consoles can't.

Yes, but the angles are weird. But again, I don't see why flycam mode won't be possible to enable on PC. You'll be stuck having to take screens of Shep and Co with weapons ready, but you'll be able to frame shots however you like and it's better than nothing.
