If you bring Shale, one of the dialogue options you get is telling her that the demon brought her into the fade with magic and this is why dwarves or golems can be there.

As a matter of fact Avernus states quite clearly that the darkspawn are not tied to the fade.

You don't think the fact that both a main character dwarf and oghren can literally enter the fade (albiet through the will of a demon) is fairly definitive?Totally agree with Fulgrim88, I'd really like to see a definitive answer on this. We can speculate all we want, however all the lore we have is viewpoints, theories, and mythologies of the peoples of Ferelden. The mechanics restrict us from having dwarven wizards, and offer the explanation that it's because we have no connection to the fade, not that we don't believe that we have a connection to the fade. I'd like to think that the mechanics were factual, even if it is metaknowlege.
As I see it the explanation that lyrium exposure "cuts them off" in some way means that its not missing, merely suppressed, and it takes extreme circumstances to overcome that suppression. Sloth demons being on the extreme side of things.

Its obvious that they can, I ran around in the damn thing for two hours at 3 in the morning. However, I'm not convinced.
The most plausible answer is that it was a gameplay decision, and they decided on "a wizard did it." I'm mostly hoping for a different answer.

No, they just don't do it on their own when they dream. They cannot enter the Fade themselves, but apparently they can be pulled into the Fade by other beings, like Demons. Try taking Oghren along next time you enter the Fade, and he'll comment on how strange it is for a dwarf to be there...
