Okay, so just to test it out, I let a female friend of mine play the Mass Effect 3 demo. She's pretty new to Mass Effect and she only saw bits of ME1 before. She knows nothing about ME2. So yeah, simply puth: she's a Mass Effect n00b.

She played the Earth part of the demo, after that she gave the controller to me. So I asked her: "Did you understand anything about the story so far?"

She answered: "Yes of course I understood it. It's not a very complex or hard story. What's not to understand?"

So I asked her to repeat to me the story so far.

So she did: "Earth is expecting an alien invasion, the aliens are called the Reapers or something, Commander Shepard knows more about them. He probably did something bad in the previous games because he's grounded. The alien invasion starts, the leaders ask Shepard to confirm if it's the reapers. Then you see Ashley, I remember seeing her in Mass Effect 1. So Shepard goes to the Earth leaders and then BAM!, the action begins."

So, there you have it folks, the intro is perfectly understandable, even for new players.

I think you must have skipped over the point of this thread. I don't think anyone in here cares at all about newbies not being able to understand the game.

People talk about how the intro is supposed to be confusion. I didn't find it confusing and my newbie friend didn't find it confusing either. So, how exactly is this intro confusing?

No I think that would be you who missed:
players of the demo, professional reviewers - everyone has said the same thing: "the intro feels rushed and confusing." &
where the demo starts is where the game starts. good luck to new players because they are gonna be so confused, and a wasted opportunity for import-players to refresh

It's understandable yeah but the entire reason why I'm back on Earth in the first place is to be tried for killing 300,000 people. Shepard destroyed a star system thats a big deal. Pretty much the entire intro setting is based on the events that occured in Arrival. So, wouldn't one conclude that Arrival would be brought up in said intro?

I think a lot of parts of the intro are missing to prevent spoilers.

Anderson: "Shepard bra, you've done some bad **** in the past and its gotten you in trouble, but don't worry, i'll get you out of it before the reapers arrive"

*queue Reaper invasion*

If the intro had of been this at most 20 second long scene, everyone would have still known the basic idea of whats hapenned. Shepards in trouble, he's grounded, the Reapers are coming, Anderson is trying to get Shepard out before this happens.

But to thos of us who want a little sustance; some specifics to what hapenned, this will not cut it. People's confusion, being mainy ME fans, stems from the want for more information. How does Shepard know Vega? How and when did Shepard get grounded? Where's his team gone?

All those missing details with a seemingly large whole in the story is what causes people's "confusion". They want details, not assumptions.

Understand - they CANNOT give you a single player demo and possibly give away MAJOR plot points. That would just be stupid. My guess is, the intro contains such plot points - and putting them in the DEMO which players are going to play regardless - would simply be a real bad idea. Which is probably why they chose missions that dont ANSWER any of your questions about the story, just provide more questions.

And that is totally cool, but unless they can confirm that the intro is cut to the ****ter, i'll assume the worst. It's the only way to avoid disappointment.

Wait... The demo intro is the full intro because it's the same as the leaked demo intro?

Alright. I'll just be... over there.

You can tell its not because the trial isn't shown. And there appears to be a cut between them showing the control room on the ship at the start to showing a shuttle heading for Earth. I may be wrong, but it did look like there was something missing between these two events to me.

And the lack of confirmation confirms it? What about some confirmation for that?

oh here i was thinking that the intro in both ME 1 and ME 2 sucked rather hard, ME 3 isn't exactly worse in any way and this is probably not the one in the fullversion either, just give me the option to skip intro altogether that was my main complain with both ME games because they're all boring.

I'm pretty sure these things get mentioned if you import a save. So if Bioware decided to leave them out for newcomers they must have thought it would confuse them even more and they will probably be explained later on.

I'm telling you guys, I remember a dev tweeting that there wasn't going to be a trial. Check the twitter thread it's bound to be in there. I know what I saw.

Did it say that the trial was cut from the *game* or the *demo*? Because that's a HUGELY important difference.

Also, if it's in there, why don't you find it, since as the person who saw the tweet in the first place, your ability to relocate it would be far greater than our own?

You must understand why we'd be skeptical, considering every magazine article has babbled about the trial being the start of the game. One tweet you remember seeing but can't even find is hardly convincing.

I'm guessing things will get contextualised once aboard the Normandy.

All I remember along those lines was Mac Walters saying it wasn't an actual trial with charges laid and lawyers and everything, but more of an inquiry.

That's what I'm hoping for. The demo was definitely stripped out of context but I already knew it was going to be.
