i would guess they have not beeen on a mission as this unit and Kadian is still putting them together training them.

It didn't state in that codex entry outright that it is either a training unit or a combat unit. If you see a bunch of guys throwing around singularities during some fight scenes then go with combat Prom.

Regardless if it is a training unit or a combat unit, the mindset is that you are always training.

Don't know. If it suits the needs of the higher echelons, they will break protocol or standard proceedure for whatever dubious reasons.

If that is not the case then chalk it up to the writters not really giving a damn about having to get THAT technical.

I've watched plenty of movies or played games that had the whole military backdrop and just about all of them get some technical aspects wrong. Those that do not are usually straight stories that deal more with military life and less about a typical story plot.

Most of the time directors/writers/editors will avoid sitting down and explaining all of this because it is not as important to them as driving the story forward.

Commander Shepard is Commander Shepard. He/She is a space hero who can punch reporters, kill batarians, and go dancing at a night club all in one day. Accuracy about military structure is not the top priority.

This pretty much sums up my side.

Well i wanted to say the fact that it is still a unit being trained/formed may explain why a Major is command them.

@ Prom001

The military is filled with DD forms...tons and tons of paper work.

I've been out awhile so I've tried really hard to forget the IDs of most of the forms. Basically dropping a packet means requesting and filling out the appropriate paperwork to do *Insert task*

You go through the chain of command. If you are a private you send it to your team lead, team lead sends it to squad leader, platoon sergeant/leader, then your commanding officer. If it needs to go higher then it will be sent to whatever level necessary to get it signed off.

Ash jumps from LT in ME2, to LT Commander in ME3. Four ranks. One year. That would not happen, ever. Yes it's nit picky, but it's also dumb as hell. VS doesn't need to be shoehorned into importance. They already get spectre status.

Actually I personally know a man who was promoted from Colour Sergeant to Captain for doing a good job in Afghan. Great guy but he didn't save the seat of galactic politics or anything. I think this might not be as dumb as you think it is.

I have no problem with Kaidan's rank.  He jumped two ranks after citadel and one after horizon.  That makes perfect sense.  Alliance really had to promote him after citadel, even just for PR.

Ashley's rank is what's problematic.  1 rank after citadel and 4 ranks after horizon just doesn't make sense.  If it is 4 ranks after citadel and 1 rank after horizon, then I can buy it.  At least the four ranks are for saving the entire galactic population, and also included a NCO-CO jump.

I assume Shepard's promotion got tied up in politics, then he died. Which tends to put a damper on your career advancement.

Actually, no.  If someone become a big-name hero, there's no politics involved in promoting him.  No one wants to be the politician that "didn't want to promote our Shepard."  It's the assignment (the position they give him after the promotion) part that could be political.  Seeing Shepard should still be commanding Normandy at that time, that complication also didn't exist.

And if someone dies defending their ship?  I will say this is an automatic 2-rank promotion.  Dying (honorably) in battle guarantees your promotion.

But if that someone became a big-name hero for disobeying orders and stealing a warship?

Huh, not quite, especially after the events of Arrival, the politicians want to avoid war with the terminus systems, they wll not be lookng at Shepards heroic deeds, they will in fact want to throw him to the dogs as appeasement, of course they won't do that because that also means they lose the confidence of their own people, in this respect they wll be "in a difficult position"

Let me repeat that question: do you want to be that "stuck up" politician who is all about "rules"?

Politicians are all about votes.  If they can get more votes doing a certain thing, they will.  Who do you think will be popular, the politician who supported the war hero that saved the citadel, or the politician that didn't want to promote him due to some technical rules about orders?

The "stealing warship" part will be quickly ignored by everyone involved.  The higher-ups don't want to publicize the fact that they grounded Shepard, either.

Keep in mind, that since Kaidan/Ashley get promoted to Spectre's, they probably also get an honorary rank boost as it were. It's not that unexpected, I mean if Ash/Kaidan were doing enough to earn Spectre status?

Plus, since they seem to be acting commander's for the Normandy at the start of the game, they'd need the rank to be able to give orders.

LT commander isn't the same rank as Commander, learn your Navy ranks.

Shepard is a LT Commander, and Alliance ranks are diferent from Navy ranks.

Alliance rank mainly use the Canadian navy millitary rank. Plus i'm pretty sure if you have good folk behind you can get far pretty quick ^_^

Not really, any spectre can commandeer a vessel in the citadel navies for his or her mission.
