Not really, any spectre can commandeer a vessel in the citadel navies for his or her mission.

I doubt very much that includes alliance vessels.

Keep in mind, that since Kaidan/Ashley get promoted to Spectre's, they probably also get an honorary rank boost as it were. It's not that unexpected, I mean if Ash/Kaidan were doing enough to earn Spectre status?

Plus, since they seem to be acting commander's for the Normandy at the start of the game, they'd need the rank to be able to give orders.

Maybe, but keep in mind Ashley/Kaidan/Shepard are all still part of the Alliance, so the Alliance probably prefers them to use an Alliance vessel, which allows them to keep an eye on them and whatnot. They probably don't HAVE to use an Alliance vessel, but it's still probably not something you exactly say 'no' to.

Sheperd got promoted by admiral anderson when he takes off with the normandy. "consider yourself reinstated, Commander" (not lieutenant commander (see the demo footage on youtube)). Anderson refers to Ashley as lieutenant commander all the time, and Shepard as commander. Also, in the character making screens show 'CDR' instead of LT.CDR. (again, see demo footage)

So, shepard got promoted and is a staff commander now.

This page http://masseffect.bi...om/about/story/ does the same thing. Refers to Shepard as Commnder, and Ash as Lieutenant Commander. Maybe Shepard did get a promotion.

Remember that time a Turian spectre commandeered the normandy to Eden Prime? Good times.

Shepard is and has always been a Lieutenant Commander. Do you think he managed to get promoted while he was 1. Dead 2. Working for Cerberus 3. Under arrest for mass murder. Answer: No.

No. He does and always has held the rank of Staff Commander, the same rank Kaidan has in ME2. Ashley's LT.Commander rank is right below that one.

He did not commandeer the Normandy, he was sent along by the council to assess Shepard, the mission to Eden prime was an alliance operation.

I expect a Spectre could theoretically commandeer pretty much any ship in Citadel space, but also that acting that way would tend to ****** people off. And sometimes might not work if you're dealing with the wrong captain, or are issuing questionable orders.

Giving a Spectre a reasonably high Alliance rank to reflect their authority makes sense to smooth these sort of things over

Commander Shepard. It has been Commander since ME1. Shepard has always been reffered to as commander..
Not sure why folks got the idea that Shepard is other than Commander Shepard.

The first journal (Mission) entry in ME1 indicates that Shepard is a Lieutenant Commander at the start of the mission to Eden Prime. I don't think Shepard is ever unequivocably referred to as a Staff Commander until ME2, but I'd always assumed that he/she was promoted after making Spectre and being given command of the Normandy.

Lt. Commanders are also called "Commander".  Just like 2nd Lieutenants are addressed as "Lieutenant", Brigadier Generals are addressed as "General", and so on.

Shepard is always a Lieutenant Commander. It seems like some people are making up a promotion in their heads, but it's not actually in the games.

I can't remember Shepard's rank coming up anywhere in ME2 except at the beginning of Tali's LM.

Shepard hasn't been promoted because he spent 2 years dead then worked for a known terrorist organisation. I presume that puts a dampener on your military career eh?

Yep. And then he blew up a mass relay and killed 300,000 Batarians. Also not something they gets you kudos from the brass.

Shame too, Shepard would do great in that kind of enviroment.

Admiral: Good job Shepard, you completed your mission with maximum loss of life. Honestly even we didn't expect you'd manage to trick a bus full of school children into the line of fire. Very impressive. Looks like another promotion is in order.

Actually, it appears Shepard did get that promotion to Commander.

4 seconds in, bottom right of screen.  It reads as Cmdr. Shepard, not Lt. Cmdr.

I assume Shepard's promotion got tied up in politics, then he died. Which tends to put a damper on your career advancement.

He should have been posthumously promoted however. Though to be fair it may be the case that he was posthumously promoted, but since he was stuck with Cerberus he was unaware of that fact.

EDIT: Oops..the poster above me mentioned Shep's promotion as well.

Someone posted in another thread that Shepard's rank is abbreviated in the demo somewhere as Cmdr. If that is the case it appears he has been promoted. (otherwise the abbreviation used for his rank would have been Lt. Cmdr)

its listed as CDR which is the proper way of displaying the rank of Commander . yes he is officially ranked as Commander

Both abbreviations are acceptable. The US Navy uses Lt Cmdr for a Lieutenant Commander, the Royal Navy uses Lt Cdr.

Kaidan still outranks him, Major is higher than Commander in the Alliance. Of course since they're both Spectres it doesn't matter.

If Bioware has taken the route of adding a full "Commander" rank into the codex, which would also be the best course of action - then Shepard officially outranks Kaidan, albeit if only by one rank.

Commander = Lieutenant Colonel. But ya never know.

So when did Shep get promoted? I havnt play the demo yet?

I wolud guess posthumously after the destruction of the SR-1 or after the Battle of the citadel, but they never say anything about it.
