So when did Shep get promoted? I havnt play the demo yet?

I wolud guess posthumously after the destruction of the SR-1 or after the Battle of the citadel, but they never say anything about it.

It happens when Anderson reinstates him back into the Alliance military in the demo  and plus at the bottom of the set up part of the demo its listed as CDR which is military rank of Commander .

I assume Shepard's promotion got tied up in politics, then he died. Which tends to put a damper on your career advancement.

He should have been posthumously promoted however. Though to be fair it may be the case that he was posthumously promoted, but since he was stuck with Cerberus he was unaware of that fact. Someone posted in another thread that Shepard's rank is abbreviated in the demo somewhere as Cmdr. If that is the case it appears he has been promoted. (otherwise the abbreviation used for his rank would have been Lt. Cmdr)

its listed as CDR which is the proper way of displaying the rank of Commander . yes he is officially ranked as Commander

Both abbreviations are acceptable. The US Navy uses Lt Cmdr for a Lieutenant Commander, the Royal Navy uses Lt Cdr.

no US Navy uses LCDR for Lieutenant Commanders

You are right, but Lt Cmdr has been used as an abbreviation for Lieutenant Commander as well. An example:

Lt Cmdr Smith was born in Lismore on October 8, 1908 and joined the Royal Australian Navy Reserve in 1926. While serving on the HMAS Yarra in February, 1942, Lt Cmdr Smith was praised by his then captain for shooting down an aircraft while his ship rescued more than 1000 people from the sinking British Transport Empress of Asia.
On March 4, 1942 Lt Cmdr Smith lost his life when HMAS Yarra was attacked and sunk by a force of Japanese cruisers and destroyers.

So...I guess Anderson saying "consider yourself reinstated, commander" counts as a promotion? I guess. Seems like Admiral Hackett is the only dude available to make that official.

so the end the tread

Kadian promotion is a little stretched
but
Ash's is al litte too seenig as in ME2 she is still a "Operations Chief"
wolud have made more sense if she got promoted to at least 2nd Lieutenant in ME2
or
it is because she is a SPECTRE now.

Still think there is some paperwork needed somewhere along the line.

It may be that he is at the highest full field duty rank for special forces. Any rank further up becomes more administrative then field. So they add years of seniority to his current rank as well as on paper him being treated as a higher rank. Unless he decides to go back and become an instructor it is better to keep him in the field rather then an office.

Not arguing that. Just not sure that anyone who didn't hear that order when Anderson said it would actually respect it. And seeing as how Kaidan still outranks Shepard in ME3, I wonder if there is going to be some friction there.

It could be, especially with Kaidan or Ashley still not being able to trust Shepard with his activity with Cerberus.

I expect a Spectre could theoretically commandeer pretty much any ship in Citadel space, but also that acting that way would tend to ****** people off. And sometimes might not work if you're dealing with the wrong captain, or are issuing questionable orders.

Giving a Spectre a reasonably high Alliance rank to reflect their authority makes sense to smooth these sort of things over

^this whole argument is as simple as this.  Being appointed a council Specter is an very rare honor, and along with the prestige brings a lot of power and responsibility.  Specters are some of the most powerful individuals in the galaxy, with almost unrivaled authority and very little oversight.  It has no analogy in the real world, so its kind of silly to say a military wouldnt promote her like that.  Of course they're going to give her a high rank, if only to make sure there's no hassle from some jackass officer in the alliance military that takes the stance of " i dont care about the council and their positions, you're just an enlistedman hurr derp"   The extra pay and retirement aren't a bad reward for being the 2nd human in history to make it either.

There are a lot of people with authority restrictions in their minds.  I absolutely hate being ordered around by people younger than me, even if they know what they're doing more than I do.  If I was still enlisted, and a 21 year old Chief Warrant Officer or a butter bar told me to do something, you can damn well expect me to be thrown off.

That's age, I also know people who have deeper roots in different backgrounds not to take something like a Spectre correctly.  Besides outside interference like the CIA or agencies, I completely agree with you on how to use an analogy for Spectres, we don't have anything similar to compare against

Once again. Lieutenant Commander Shepard is made the first human Spectre. He does not get any kind of promotion, and remains a Lieutenant Commander until the beginning of ME3, apparently.

So when Ashley becomes a Spectre, she is magically promoted up three or four ranks? Silly.

Also, why does a Spectre need any rank at all? Being a Spectre grants you the power you need already. Almost no one says no to a Spectre.

To give humanity a good standing, you want to make your 'mascott' Spectre better than the previous one (who's now on questionable ground)... giving the next one a higher rank than the former signifies an advancement. Not that unheard of/unreasonable... epsecially since a Spectre trumps all Council-space authority anyway.

Apparently the Human Spectres are still in the Alliance Military.  I don't know enough about other Spectres from the Turians, Salarians, or Asari, but the other two have shown to be outside their respective races agendas and are directly inclined to the Council.  Hence why Nihlus didn't care that Shepard was human, only that Shepard could do the job.

The reason why the Alliance considered the VS and Shepard for Human Spectre positions was for PR gain.

PAPERWORK is the most important thing in any modern war.

well why then do any research at all? Why write all the codey and lore stuff if you then jump around all over the place?
I mean who needs logic, story, Consistency and all then when you can have Action?

That is whats killing the movie industry right now for example.

Commander Shepard. It has been Commander since ME1. Shepard has always been reffered to as commander..
Not sure why folks got the idea that Shepard is other than Commander Shepard.

Lt. Commanders are also called "Commander".  Just like 2nd Lieutenants are addressed as "Lieutenant", Brigadier Generals are addressed as "General", and so on.

I did not know that

But I do notice that Anderson quite pointedly refers to Ashley as Lt. Commander, several times, In the demo, while he only refers to Shepard as Commander.

Forget about the ranks, think about a Marine bring called a soldier!!! Commander is a Naval/Coast Guard rank not a Marine rank. WTH!!!!! Even on my best days I would never call a Devil-Dog a soldier or a Soldier a marine that my friends is playing with fire. Just me barking at the moon.

Agreed. I know it's a game, of course. BUT… the whole part of this thread is to nip-pick. How hard would it have been to do it right? Why not call a shotgun a blaster-rifle (lol)? By-the-way @chengthao, thanks for serving!
