Shepard has seniority and command of the mission, superseding rank over Kaidan and Ashley. Just like when Master Chief had command over an NCO as his mission superseded importance and had backing by higher ranks.

@iz

Did you play the demo?  He is reinstated in the military by an Admiral as well as given an assignment, in the constraints of the situation, that is about as official as it gets.

lol! Yeah, I guess as I thought about it, there's no other way to go about it. Maybe Hackett will confirm it all officially later, but it's not like they could stop to fill out the proper paperwork. Hopefully they have some uniforms onboard for him.

You DO realize this is a game right? Made by people who've never been in the military?

Promotion is likely based on merit and not time served, being part of the team that took down Saren, not to mention being a Spectre, is likely going to count towards that.

And Shepard still is not a Captain.  It's pretty surreal.

Yes he is . he is the commanding officer of the SR 2 as well Commander . that makes him the Captain of the ship

In traditional role and skipper duty.  He is still a Lieutenant Commander.

wow you die hard ME fans really buy Bioware's stupid vision of military ranks I see . The commanding officer of the SR 2 is Shepard who is refereed to in the game as Commander Shepard . in other words he or she is both Captain and Commander of the SR 2

That's such a pathetic BS cop-out response. Why is that always the asnwer? Can games never be anything more then what they are? That whole phrase really ticks me off.

So because it's a game we can't expect anything out of it? No thank you.

And how do you know whether any of the devteam has served in the military. Geez.

"Bioware's stupid vision of military ranks"

That would be, uh, the version of the ranks that the game is based on.

Forget about the real world military, let alone the US one.

Its a game but when it comes to military ranks I would hope that Bioware would have some understanding of them .

You realize that game companies do research to be accurate to military information right?  Now not this case entirely as it is a stretch but for a game like Halo or COD, they hire military consultants for accuracy.

Call it nitpicking all you want, but the rank structure has always been dumb. Why they could not have just stuck with the US model, I have no idea.

The difference between the rank of Captain and the billet of Captain.  As there is  a Star Trek quote for eveything lets have O'Brien explain.

"It's an old naval tradition. Whoever's in command of a ship, regardless of rank, is referred to as 'captain.' "
"You mean if I had to take command, I would be called 'captain,' too?"
"Cadet, by the time you took command, there'd be nobody left to call you anything."

– O'Brien and Nog

"You realize this is just a game" is like saying we should realize the Devs are ignorant morons. I don't think that's the case at all.

Chill out, pal. If you knew my "history" on here you'd see that I don't excuse things by saying "it's a game." I think there need to be tougher choices. I think people need to die. I think ME3 should be more realistic than it will be.

But the fact is, it isn't. I wasn't saying "it's a game" as a reason why it SHOULDN'T be accurate, but as the reason WHY it's not that accurate. Because the devs didn't put that much thought into it.

Again, I'm not saying that's okay, just that that's the way it is.

See, now that is a much more nuanced statement. How is anyone supposed to know that's what you meant?

No matter how you slice it, it sucks. And it's not excused by anything. It doesn't take a genius to be able to do five minutes of research on military ranks. It should be accurate.

So I wonder. In 2,5 to 3 years people get promoted pretty fast.

Kadian gets promoted from Staff Lieutenant, 3 ranks to Major.

Ash is even better going from the NCO rank Gunnery Chief, 5 ranks up to Lieutenant Commander, some rank as Shep.

I know i know but got nothing better to do at the moment and yes I know the alliance millitary is not the US Navy/USMC.

p.s.: Worst example of this is  the new awful so called "star trek" movie where 3 year cadet Kirk get promoted to Captain.

well when you're part of a team that saves the entire galaxy, have a friend in a really high place that gives you the oppourtunity to succeeed and you do You get really awesome promotions. You forget Ashley's technical scores were incredible, and the 212 adored her as squad leader but her grandfathers FCW antics held her back unjustly. She could have been the same rank as Kaidan in ME1 if not for that and be Major Ashley Williams.

Kaidan's also a career serviceman and a biotic. The only reason Shepard gets to commander at 29 before Kaidan is because of either Elysium, Torfan, or Akuze. Kaidan doesn't have a high profile mision until being on teh hunt for saren which earns him Staff Commander

tl;dr? Doing Spectacular thing gets you Spectacular rewards.

He is neither of those things. He is suspended from duty. He has no assigment at all.

Until Anderson is forced to reinstate him when the SR 2 arrives to pick him up in the demo . once that happens he assumes command of the ship and is back in charge

I've never been in the military. Somehow I understand how military ranks work, though. I find it hard to believe that on a dev-team making a game like this there is not someone who is a military history buff.

What do you expect? They're humans. You surely don't have high expectations of humans, do you?

I do in fact, but that's a whole other discussion, and a more philosophical one then is probably to be had in this particular forum.

LT commander isn't the same rank as Commander, learn your Navy ranks.

Shepard is a LT Commander, and Alliance ranks are diferent from Navy ranks.

Shepard is a Commander, Ashley is a Lt. Commander. She is exactly one rank below him (if Bioware are mimicking the real-life ranking system, at least partially).
