Technically, Shepard could've been promoted to Staff Commander, and Ashley would still be underneath his rank.

My only concern is if Kaiden's a major, then there's no way Shepard can just take the ship unless Alenko gives him control over it.

Or Kaiden is shot in the face/left someplace to die.

Does this stem from just a general problem with authority or is it just because Kaidan didn't drop to his knees and beg to kiss your a** upon your glorious return as a terrorist errand boy/girl?  I actually really hope Bioware takes advantage of the fact that we, for the first time, have people on our squad with grounds to question or even countermand our orders.  It could make for a lot of interesting situations though it'd get old fast if they just disagree with everything.

Whoo, assumption's much?

Just stated a possible Renegade option (however unlikely due to BioWares love of shoehorning).

When it comes down to it it is not official rank that really counts but who can get the job done and who the crew will follow past the gates of hell because they believe to their bones that person will lead them to victory.

If, for whatever reason the VS is given 'official' control of the Normandy, they'll still defer to you. After all, it doesn't matter what the logbooks say if Admirals Hackett and Anderson, Joker and EDI, the Council, and everyone else and their mom acknowledge you as the real leader. As far as we know, TIM and the Reapers are after YOU, and not whoever made their name by hanging onto your coat tails. :)

Meh, no biggie. The only problem I have with the VS is that crap dialog we were force fed on Horizon in ME2.

I'm guessing resolving this problem is our first Paragon/Renegade choice.

Or people are letting their paranoia get the best of them and it won't be a problem at all. Alistair had seniority over the Warden in Dragon Age, and yet there was never any problems with leadership. Miranda and Jacob were both veteran Cerberus Operatives but it was made known right away that Shepard was in Command.

Why are so many people getting their panties in a twist when it comes to VS?

It's a story plot to give the player control.  Allistair is just afraid of taking charge, if you didn't pay attention to him refusing to become King until you shoved him into it.

Miranda and Jacob were put under your command after the Station by the Illusive Man.  For the reason of...surprise!  Plot!

So wouldn't that also mean there could be a plot reason why Ash and Kai don't challenge Shep's authority?

Yeah up until now people have been content to just let Shepard be Shepard, however given that Shepard being Shepard destroyed an entire solar system the powers that be might want to put a bit more restraint on him/her.

Ashley in command? U gotta be kidding me! I did her a favor when I saved her on Virmire. Although if I were given true power of choosing, I'd have left both Ashley and Kaiden on Virmire and recruited Captain Kirrahe and Shiala to fill in the gaps. And I don't really get why would the Council choose a racist like Ashley Williams or a Whiner like Kaiden Alencko to become Spectres. Just fantacizing here guys, no need to get worked up about it.

Ash and Kaiden will surrender command of the ship to you instantly. Mostly because they get shot.

Possibly.  Don't have the game, didn't read the script.

Simple after the disrespectful act they pulled in ME 2 and if Bioware wants to play that same game in 3 well sh*t will hit the fan .

Council choose Ash becasue she's competent...and not racist
Council choose Kaidan because he is competent..and not a whiner.

All this Shep-is-bigger-than-life vibe is getting on my nerves.

Oh I am sorry but your ****** poor VS are nothing but grunts that will take orders from Shepard in 3 just like they did in ME 1 . Shepard and Liara and Garrus are all bigger than the VS will ever be when it comes to Mass Effect franchise

I guess you will want to play ME3 using Ashley or Kaidan as the lead character. Of course Shepard is larger-than-life.  He/she is the hero..in case u didn't notice.
And about all the talk about their competence...I didn't take either of them to most of the missions and assignments when I played ME1. I used Tali and Garrus for Tech skills. I used Liarra and Wrex for Biotics. I mostly played as a soldier. It was more than enough.
What kind of 'competent' person starts each sentence with a "Sorry commander!" (reference Kaidan Alenko conversations in ME1). And don't even start about Ashley. She talks about other species like they are animals...willing to go to any lengths to uplift her family's pride...a lost cause.

Useless strawman is useless.
It doesnt' matter if he's the hero. There's plenty of Heros who don't have the messiah complex Sheaprd has.

You silly man.
If you saw an Elcor on a remote planet, you would consider it an animal too. Because it DOES look like some space cow. It's ALIEN. Of course some will look like animals to us!

And yes, they are competent.

Good grief! not again, Ashley is xenophobic, learn the difference, and yes there is a difference, and no, I'm not an Ashley fan.
