The whole point of the kid dying thing was obviously to enforce a "now this is REALLY personal" kind of revelation in Shepard. IMO The scene is used to show new players who aren't as familiar with the story the horror of the Reapers. How they're not just smashing buildings like King Kong but they actually want to kill everyone and everything.

If Dragon Age 2 did something correctly. It was the chance to say something funny at each scene. I always went with those choices, because most games didn't let me do that.

"Hey, your son maybe dead, but look at the bright side: things can't go any worse.. atleast today!"

I felt like such a troll doing that sometimes, but I... just couldn't resist!

I felt the inclusion of the kid was a little too unsubtle for want of a better word. Don't get me wrong, it was nowhere near as bad as something like the kid dying in MW3, but it just felt ever so slightly too forced for me.

However, the music of the scene and the general feel of those last few minutes easily outweigh this complaint for me. Clint Mansell's piano piece combined with seeing the Normandy abandoning a burning Earth, and then flying past the remnants of Earth's fleets, was just incredible imo. Right up there with seeing the Normandy destroyed in terms of emotional impact. Excellent scene. Hopefully there will be more like it in the final game.

I thought that part was cheesy and forced. The sight of earth being invaded and destroyed was enough for me. And the reunion with Garrus, Liara and Wrex was much more emotional for me. I sat here playing with a wide smile on my face when they appeared on screen.

You have no choice but to have Shepard act all concerned. I'm sorry but what if my version of Renegade Shepard doesn't give a rat's ass for the little street urchin crawling around in some airduct? What if my Shep wants to get the hell out of there to start kicking ass? Nope, sorry, BioWare wants to shove sappy child death scenes down Shepard's throat.

They should have made the option to go over to the kid a renegade/paragon interupt where paragon is going over to help and renegade is pushing forward.

This I can agree with. I haven't seen the scene itself but my Shep certainly wouldn't get teary eyed over a kid. A puppy yes, but a kid, meh.

I laughed when the kid died...

For 2 reasons...

#1 it was too predictable...

#2 it reminded me of Cloverfield.

I don't cry for cheap writing sucker-punches, I just laugh because of how obvious it is.

I was so sad, because that little kid? He was Mass Effect 3's equivalent to Jenkins/Wilson!

It would have been a more sad moment to simply leave the burning skyline with that awesome soundtrack.

The kid felt forced, because it was shown 3 times within 10 minutes:
"Look, there's a kid playing on the roof!","Hey, that's the kid hiding in a ventilation shaft!","Oh look, there is the kid again, he died. Now feel sad!"

2 million on day one, 7 more by the end of the week. I doubt Reapers are that picky that they only killed soldiers or adults.

It worked well in Schindler's List. There was the girl with the red coat and it showed several times through the movie and in the end ... you know what (or even not, whatever). Point is if they don't try to squeeze out an emotion in such a cheap way in a short time they may even succeed. The idea with the kid wasn't even so bad if they knew how to do it right.

Why so serious?

But really it seems like everyone who is so detached from the emotional weight of that scene is just trying too hard to be aloof. And to the folks wondering how anyone could feel emotional when playing a video game, maybe Super Mario Bros is more their speed.

In all seriousness though it was totally the scene when they get into the 2 helecopters and you think they're finally going to get away ...

Lol no

It was a genuinely sad moment to be sure. It's not often a game generates genuine emotions like that. Well done Bioware.

Oh, I wasn't trying to be serious. I was joking. :P

Maybe it's my avatar. It does give a serious impression.
