If I had to guess, I'd say that we use MDY format to aid in filing.  Filing by month makes more sense than filing by day, so you put the number of the month first so that you can easily cross-reference different files.  Of course, filing by year takes priority, but that often means that you have separate drawers/folders for whole years, with each one divided into months.  The day is the most specific thing of the date, and in large scale filing, the last thing you need to look at.  Just a theory.

My whole point is that it would be best for posters on an international forum to avoid posting dates in numbers, as there's a pretty big divide on what those numbers could mean.  Just type out the name of the month, or use the abbreviation, and there's no confusion and bickering as to which system makes the most sense.

No its Fing stupid and out of order. I like the Euro system its in order from least to greatest.

Oh?  So when someone asks you what the date is, you say "it's the 13th of February" instead of "February 13th?"  The US date notation mimics the one that you actually use in speech, and it's the one that's out of order?  I find the Euro notation annoying, and all this confusion could be avoided by simply typing out the name of the month instead of a number.

And don't even get me started on using a comma for decimals.  That bugs the crap out of me.

To be fair - it'snot just europe that uses the D-M-Y format - looking at the map on this page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_format_by_country the majority of the world uses either D-M-Y or Y-M-D it's mainly only the US & Canada that use M-D-Y (there are a few countries that use a that in addition to either D-M-Y or Y-M-D).

As for the comma thing it's one of my pet peeves now that I live in Norway (from Australia originally) that and the extra letters they have in their alphabet oh and thier dislike of the letter "c" but it's just how it is here, I don't expect them to change it just because I don't like it.

Oh and in answer to your question - yes I do say "it's the 13th of February" (assuming it acutally is ofc) the majority of the time - the useage of February 13th is more common now but then that is probably due to the influence of American TV more than anything else...and language like many things is a living thing - it changes and grows over the years - heck lust look at how mainstream textspeak is becoming.

Actually for filing - Y-M-D would be better - no need for seperate drawers/folders for each year etc.

Actually, all the US notation mirrors is US speech. You'll find most british say '13th of February' when mentioning form of date. Our way of stating the date mirrors how we say it, just like yours.

Besides, its mathetmatically logical to place data in order of magnitude, and you can't argue with maths - thats probably why the rest of the world does it too

That said, I vote that we should use UNIX epoch timestamps as dates. They make more sense.

Be that as it may, I prefer American English accents (not those from the American South and New England, but the general newscaster one). They seem to be far more rhotic than most British English accents, something I appreciate dearly. I know so many Brits who just don't pronounce anything (especially my Scouser friend), and it's godsdamn infuriating.

And here I was, raised by a bunch of Scottish people and Brooklynites who can't pronounce anything worth beans!

I write all my dates the proper way despite living in the US. D/M/Y for the wynne.
