Guys I've tried searching the forums and nothing has turned up.  Has anyone figured out what the forumlas are for calculating spell damage?

(100 + spellpower) * spell coefficient. If its a Damage over Time ability (AoE or not), the damage gets divided by the duration, and each tick receives this portion of damage.

I was actually going to start this (to help console players who don't have access to toolset), but with the next big patch looming the horizon, I decided to wait till then. With it fixing the notorious DEX bug, there's a big chance they'll also address some spells as well.

a rough calculation without much hassle is to realize 1 spellpower u have contribute to roughly 1% dmg increase to the base spell dmg without any spellpower.

in other words if u hit something for 30 dmg with 0 spellpower, u will hit it for 60 with 100. that is pretty much about it for practical reasons.

damn so it seems like spellpower is fairly worthless compared to increasing your mana pool

is there a list floating around out there with the base damage for spells and/or duration for spells like sleep?

Visit your local Mage Tower quartermaster.

WIL is only useful for mages if you're running pot cooldown mods.

No, again, willpower is worthless compared to spellpower. You can hit 150 spellpower fairly easily, you have a ton of ways to restore mana without pots (and high magic means you can rely entirely on lesser pots due to more efficient mana pool and mana restore bonus from pot due to the high magic stat), and even then, you can make 100-200 Lesser Lyrium pots for dirt cheap and this will last you thorugh the game if you don't literally waste pots at every encounter.

You can regain mana very easily in combat. Making your spells kill your opponents faster, however, is something no potion or buff (Spell Might and Wisp are mandatory to a high spellpower build anyway; so can't use those as an argument in favor of a big mana pool) will do for you. And trust me, there is a big difference between your Fireball carving off 60% of enemy HP as opposed to only 30%.

Roughly speaking, for most single target spells every 3 points of magic will increase your damage by one.
