The problem with them is that they can't get over their ME 1 nostaliga and they are so blinded by it they never gave ME 2 a chance.  Since they were so mad that ME 2 wasn't ME 1 2.0 they label anyone that loves ME 2 as "CoD gamer or shooter fan" even if the person that loves ME 2 was a big fan of ME 1 as well.

BTW there is nothing wrong with being a CoD or shooter fan.

Of course there's nothing wrong with being a shooter fan. And there's nothing wrong with believing ME1 was the better overall game. I don't tend to care much for straight shooters but its just a preference. Because 1.) I kinda suck at them, and 2.) I prefer a strong and constant stream of story where as most shooters have fragmented or straight bad stories. But that's fine, shooters are not meant to be strong in the story department (but those who have put extract effort into them really take the cake).

But, you ruin your own arguments when you say things like "can't get over their nostaliga" because it assumes there is something wrong with being a ME1 fan. The combat was more fluid, dynamic, and balanced out in ME2. It didn't play to my strengths but I couldn't deny it was far superior to ME1. However, its story fell so far from what I had experienced in ME1 that I could not in good conscious consider it the "better game" for myself. It was fine, mind you, but it wasn't the quality I was expecting. Story is everything to me, so yeah.

Heh, I doubt if most shooter fans decieve themselves into thinking the writing is good. People play shooters for shooting, and come to Mass Effect when they want a good story.

You'd be surprised.

Many people love Halo's story and see the potential it has to be something great. CoD 4 has amazing narrative focus and imersion but the recent games have sucked.

Black Ops was better than MW3 and that's sad because Treyarach is not know for making quality games.

People don't play those games for their writing.  I am not a CoD fan and I am not big on pure shooters but they are legitimate games and they must be doing something right considering their popularity.

The franchise is a success so far. The fact that many people are looking forward to ME3 and still drawn towards ME2 is testimony to this.

You have nothing to worry about for ME3.

The narrative is strong in this one.

Oh I'm not worried. I'm actually rather excited.

Still think some of the new combat elements are jarring (I wanted to take cover, not roll, idiot!) but overall I think it will balance out the parts I suck at with the parts I love. So, it'll be worth it. Gotta work for what you love as they say!

On shooters, I would definitely argue that Halo's plot is good. It's just that most of the good stuff is buried in the novels and just sort of slapped onto the game.

As for ME3 being successful, I think it will be. They got the shooting almost down in ME2, and they're improving on the RPG side of things for 3, which was really the only issue with 2. So I see it working.

...of course, people here will hate it, but people here seem to hate everything.

They are legitimate games. They don't have strong stories because they don't expect you to need one. It's just a different kind of gameplay. It's for some people and not for others. Just like RPG's are for some people and not for others.

I think mass effect overall has done a decent job of turning the whole experience into a hybrid. It's not perfect and won't appeal to everybody but overall they put together a solid experience.

Some of you guys care way too much about other people's opinions.

Financially, I'm sure ME3 will be a success. This series has a solid fanbase and has focused a lot on appealing to new players as well. Winning awards like 'Most Anticipated' at the VGA's and multiple gaming websites considerably expands the spread of its marketing. And as others have said, pre-order figures have been way up.

For review scores, I'm sure it will also be wildly successful. The first two games are both in the mid 90's on Metacritic, and I expect a similar result for ME3. BioWare has listened to what the majority of the fans wanted and implemented those new features, such as far more and deeper RPG elements, improved combat mechanics, etc...Personally, the game has looked very impressive so I could see it scoring slightly higher overall than ME2, but something would have to be very wrong for it to be lower than a 90 on Metacritic.

Of course, none of those two markers for success matter to you, the gamer. As seen from the (kind of pathetic) fighting in this thread, two of the more well-recieved games on the last console generation have their supporters and detractors. Some people HATE ME2 and can't understand why anyone would like ME1, and vice versa. Yet both did reasonably well financially, and very well with review scores. So ultimately the same thing will happen with ME3; some people will love it and others will hate it. Most likely the people that hated ME2 will hate ME3, and those two games seem to resemble each other far more than ME1 and ME3.

But why should you care what other people think about a game if you enjoy it? It's ultimate success or failure will depend on you. If it's your favorite game ever, than it is a success to you. No-one else's opinion or review score will change your mind about that. For example, I've recently been playing Skyward Sword for Wii, and I think it is an exceptionally good Zelda game. Most people scored it very high, but one website gave it a 75%. Do I disagree with that score? Hell yes. But it didn't affect my enjoyment of the game at all.

TL;DR: Its success will depend on whether you personally like the game or not, because that's what really matters. So just wait and see.

Not at all,  I am an ME 1 fan myself,  I just happen to prefer ME 2 over ME 1.  Maybe I should have worded it differently but I am specificaly talking about people that hated ME 2 but loved ME 1 and they always go out of their way to trash ME 2 while saying ME 1 was better.

For me, story is always my top priority. So, regardless of gameplay and all that, ME3 will most likely be a success for me personally due to the conclusion of this story, which I've been waiting for the past few years.

From playing the demo, I can see that ME3 will be very cinematic, and that makes me happy... my main hope for the game is that at the end of it, I'll say to myself... "Gee willerkers bd, that was fcuking EPIC!" And then proceed to load my next Shepard.

As everyone is saying, we don't know yet.
So far, to me, anyway, the gameplay looks better and tighter, but the story seems weaker.
Hopefully, I'm wrong and it will all come together in the finished product.

Don't worry about it. You could start a thread asking about the release date of the game and one page later people would be arguing about what makes an RPG. This is just how things work on BSN.

And as an answer to your topic, the game will certainly be a financial success as proven by pre-order numbers. Critically it looks like it will also be successful. People mostly seem to be pretty positive about latest trailers and the demo. So unless they drop the ball on something major in the full game I'd expect for the game to get as much of a positive reception as ME2.

I see what you mean there. What I should have gone for is that there's a difference between good writing, and just a fun story. Halo's not the same hard[er] sci-fi style/setting as ME, but I see the entertainment value in the story. I wouldn't give CoD the same leeway though, since its set either in the documented past or the present, and there's such easy potential for a good story.

Mass Effect, though, across all three games, has succeeded in my books, in both fields. I play ME1 largely for the story now, though I almost never played it at all. Now that I have, I love it and I'm glad I didn't miss out. ME2 didn't have the same, epic central story, but the characters and seeing their ideas of "closure" was interesting, and I do prefer that combat. ME3 looks to tie it all together nicely for me, concluding the story and delivering another dose of good combat.

Mass Effect is a hybrid.  People liked ME 1's story but  felt that the combat wasn't quite right (I had fun with it myself but I wouldn't use ME 1's combat as a selling point).  In ME 2 they nailed the combat mechanics but some people felt that the story wasn't as strong.  In my opinion both games had great sci-fi atmospheres and both let you experience this fantastic futurisitic setting that bioware has created.  It appears that ME 3 will combine the best of both games.  Instead of worrying about whether it is a shooter or RPG I prefer to think of Mass Effect as an interactive SCI-FI epic with a compelling story and fun combat.

ME3 combines the best elements of ME1's storytelling and customization with ME2's better characerization and combat.
