So new players don't get brought up to speed on the events of the second game?  They don't get to decide if they want to keep the base or not?

No, why bother?  Seriously...asking somebody who didn't play Mass 2 whether or not they kept the Collector Base is like asking you whether or not you turned off Zablog's power control unit.  Completely pointless question since the player is not qualified to answer.

Way more elegant just to write out the Collector Base from a noob's playthrough.  Now you and I will get extra content based on our decision, but the noob doesn't need to be bothered with it.  He can get busy wrecking the Reapers with the toys available to him in this game, the one he actually paid for and wants to enjoy.

But if you're not going to bring them up to speed on the foundation of the story, how much more confused will they be with a trial?  That would be the least of their confusion when they start hearing words like genophage, heretic geth, hell what are geth in general.

So the noobs will just have to be told about it in Mass 3.  That's fine, none of us knew what a genophage was before we were told about it in Mass 1.

Damn it Phaedon, where is your super awesome 'confirmed features' thread?

All I can find is your old and busted one. :S

Ah! Found it! Well.. kinda..
https://docs.google....?hl=en_US&pli=1

It's number 132, "The choices you make in the trial at the beginning of ME3 will set the tone for the future in the game."

Sorry I can't link to the tweet that prompted this, but as it was added by Phaedon you can be assured that it [or at least at some point in time 'was] is accurate and reliable information.

No one "needs it". But it's much more consistent and better storytelling.

Yeah, I'll be happy with the game either way. It's not a question of needing it. It's the fact that we were told last year that it would be in the game. I was looking forward to defending myself. Now it's possible that it's not in the game. It's weird.

If it's not, I think we are allowed to be ever so mildly bummed out bu that.

That's everyone's gripe, we're not getting any extra content compared to those who didn't play the first two games, or more specifically those who didn't play arrival.  Arrival was made as this big build up to a trial where you'd have to answer for what you did, show up in your dress blues and all that BS.  Then it doesn't even get mentioned.

I think Arrival IS mentioned by Anderson when you import.

Too bad it didn't make it to the game, it really sucks

*Here's hoping the beta/demo supressed that bit*

I hope they won't make it a part of a DLC, lol.

I think part of the problem is that we don't see "the rest" of the intro. Think back to ME2. What if you were only shown the part where you die and then escape the Lazarus project, stopping right before the shuttle ride?

You're jumping to conclusions.  You won't know what extra content completing Arrival gives you until you import a Shep who completed Arrival.  I would be surprised if it didn't give you any more content (in fact in the leaked demo footage Anderson referenced it during the walk to the committee meeting), but I think it's unrealistic to expect many lines of dialogue and extra cut scenes, as some people seem to have done.  The story of Mass Effect 3 will focus on the events of Mass Effect 3, not the path that led us here.  That would be flabby writing.

That's better than nothing if you ask me. I'm still clinging to (maybe false) hope that there is more to the intro than in the demo.

I really hope you're right.. but if the one or two people from Bioware who responded are to be believed, then the demo intro is where it really begins.

I don't even remember much from the intro to ME1. On some ship with a bunch of strangers in space around some random star system.

Can you point to that? Because I also remember him saying "yes it is. it's how you start the game". Which came first?

See, here's a good use for their "Action" and "RPG" features. Those of us who want our trial could have it in the RPG. Those of you who don't can just opt for Action and dive right in without it. I'll be disappointed if they just stripped the trial entirely rather than making use of their options menu.

I've rarely known a group of devs who are consistant in their responses.

I'd be happy for a comic explaining the trial like that comic for ME2. Just please don't tell me its canned.

Chris isn't a dev though, and a lot of things he has said in the past aren't fully accurate.

That's not how they work.  Action mode has the same cinematics, the game just chooses Shep's responses for you rather than having to choose them yourself.
