But, chris confirmed the trial's not in.

I've rarely known a group of devs who are consistant in their responses.

Agreed. One minute it's
"The choices you make in the trial at the beginning of ME3 will set the tone for the future in the game." The next it's "what trial??"

One thing make me suspect a trial exists.  First, the demo opened with a loading screen.  Remember the Sur'Kesh part had a loading screen in place of some of the footage shown in the beta leak.  Didn't the demo go character creation - loading screen - opening scene of demo?

Here's hoping the intro to ME3 demo was streamlined purely to help it fit into a downloadable size on xblive, Sur'Kesh certainly looked as though it had a few bits and pieces missing, the absence of Mordin and Shepard greeting each other was one thing that caught my eye.... doubtful they'd cut that out and just throw you infront of a terminal and prompt you to go "Push this button to start rest of level".

Right? >.>

I really hope you're right.. but if the one or two people from Bioware who responded are to be believed, then the demo intro is where it really begins.

I think you misunderstand me.  I wouldn't be surprised if this is where the game begins.  However, I also bet that once you're on the Normandy you have some discussions with the VS survivor and Vega.

If someone played a demo of ME2 that just included the Normandy going down and waking up in the Cerberus facility, I bet the responses would have been very similar.  It wasn't until Shepard was aboard the shuttle with Miranda and Jacob that you revisited the past and started learning about the characters.

I hope theres a trial or at least SOMETHING that was cut from the beginning. Vega has no introduction at all, we just go straight to him being Shepard's buddy like there's history there the game assumes we already know. The Admirals and everyone also treat you like the trial already occurred and we already know what its outcome was without really explaining it any more then "is that why they grounded me?" and that everyone already knew the reapers we're coming just didn't know when but in ME2 most of the galaxy still didn't believe in them so what changed?

If that's how the final game starts that's pretty bad. I want a trial, but what I really want is just anything the give the intro better pace and not have things so rushed and shallow that it makes you feel like you missed something.

I'm really hoping the trial still exists because as people have stated before, it would confuse the hell out of people. My brother is a veteran player of Mass effect and when he played the demo I had to stop the game to explain everything to him: Shep's actions in the arrival DLC, the trial, and shep being relieved from duty. Otherwise he'd have been clueless as to what was going on.

Basically the opening only makes sense to people who knew about the trials existence and the events that take place in Arrival. What doesn't add up to me is why in Arrival Hackett says to be ready to take the hit and then some devs say its not in the game anymore. Why then would you plant the seed in the second game and do nothing with it? Well it wouldn't be the first time *cough* ME2's opening and sheps death *cough*

After seeing the intro, I would love to see what they cut. Because 'we fight or we die' seems woefully underbaked for a response concerning intergalactic space invaders. Also, once again, the council, the authorities seem so clueless as to test credibility. Can they really be that clueless?

Just saw in other threads that [barring an official announcement] the ME3 game has been complete and gone 'gold!'. [gold = game is suitable to be burned onto disks and distributed to stores]

I'd have initially been wracked with great anticipation and would have many sleepless nights come march, waiting for the clock to tick over so that I'd be one day closer to getting myself a copy.

NOW however... I'm wracked with anxietity that the demo 'is as served' in the main game, and I'll be spending many sleepless nights come march, waiting and fearing as the clock ticks over that when I finally get ME3 into my console, aside from very quick sum up of past events by Anderson in the span of a few seconds while walking to the commitee, that it'll be just like the demo.

Yes, having played the dlc's, read the books/comics a dozen or so times, I'm able to piece the events together leading up to that point myself.. but.. still.. it just feels.. so.... rushed!

Maybe the trial is done using a flashback.

Can you point to that? Because I also remember him saying "yes it is. it's how you start the game". Which came first?

That would be really pointless.  Why cut away from the actual plot to cover an event in the past that has no relevance to the plot?

How would you know if it has no relevance(no spoilers)?
An example may be like when they are boxing and start talking about the past.  Then you could go back to
a previous scene.

I still hope there's more to the beginning. This makes me hope:

If you go off of what the devs said about it setting the tone for the game, you'd think it would have SOME relevance.

I wish Jarrett Lee would come in here and answer this question for us. He's addressed a bunch of other questions this weekend.

Nice find... I respect them not wanting to give everything away. But I wish they would stop contradicting themselves.

This woulda been sweet.

Still, the whole trial on Earth business was convincingly argued to be a plothole.

Mass Effect 3 was supposed to begin with Shepard on trial for his actions in Arrival.  There are multiple interviews or news stories that claim that the invasion begins in the middle of Shepards trial.  But here, he just walks over to the guys and says 'we fight or we die." and they show up.  Nothing close to a trial.

So was it just cut from the demo, or the game entirely?

A few links to back this up:
"The final ‘Story Demo’ was from the beginning of the game, with Shepard having apparently been summoned to Earth to stand trial"

"Mass Effect 3 will begin immediately following the events of "Arrival". Commander Shepard will face trial and during the hearing, the Reaper invasion will begin."

"Piggybacking off of the final DLC available for Mass Effect 2, Arrival, Mass Effect 3 begins with Commander Shepard on trial. In the middle of it, the Reapers show up and start their attack on Earth."

"The story starts a few months after the end of Mass Effect 2. Mass Effect 3 opens with Commander Shepard on trial on Earth"

There are many more links, here are a few of the more prominent ones.

that or we are just seeing a part after the trial so many months after

maybe the trial hasn't happened yet

and may come into play when we can travel around the galaxy?

(maybe if we go to the citadel or if we get to visit the batarian homeworld)

Even though you may disagree with putting in the trial I disagree that such a event or mentioning in a game has no point. Arrival was the whole reason Shep ended getting grounded in the first place among other things.

That would surely be nice. Also they should keep their promises to release info on set dates or at least say that they won't.
