It's not a trial. More like an urgent hearing that lasts 2 minutes.Chris Priestly wrote...

So, what happened to the trial?

Mass Effect 3 starts (roughly) 6 months after the end of Mass Effect 2. It starts with the end of the trial of Commander Shepard during which the Reapers first arrive on earth. This is the bit that starts the game and the demo.
there you go! thanks Chris

What everyone is wondering is, is there more to the trial? Like Genesis, where new players can make decisions based on things that happened in part 1 and 2. Specifically, Arrival.

Meh, I'm ok with this. I think the trial would have bogged down the opening of the game unnecessarily and disrupted the pacing of the story.
Then you're the kind of customer EA wants. No sense bogging players down with plot and character development when there are things to kill!
(Sorry I couldn't help it, I'm disappoineted at the opening- it's another bit of railroading and cut corners)
did you feel the same way with the mass effect 2 intro?

I may have misinterpreted the beginning of the demo, but I don't recall there being any mention or hint that a trial had just ended.Chris Priestly wrote...

Good to finally know. Arrival has no consequnces.
That may be, but Hackett stated there would be a ****storm to face from HQ about nuking 300k bat's. Now there isn't. Which is what I was stating when I said there would be no consequences of Arrival.

The Trial/Hearing has been reduced to "We fight or we die."
It would appear, we don't know for sure at this point. If they did remove it then this is a Peter Moleneux kind of move
Maybe it just comes down to the noobs again. To make the 3rd chapter more accessable to new gamers, the trial might have been gutted to facilitate an easier transition for them. As disappointing as that would be, it also makes sense because new gamers wouldn't have had a single clue why their *new* Shepard was on trial or how to even respond to any of the charges.
IF this in fact turns out to the be the case then it will just be another log on the bonfire of disappointments we've had with this series. So I think all of us need to sort of prepare for the trial not being there, and just move on.

How would a trial contribute anything to plot and character development? It would be a review of the last two games and nothing more. The only value it has is the entertainment of watching Shepard get unjustly grilled for what he's done to thwart the Reaper invasion and him defending himself for it.Gemini1179 wrote...

Ok, I know I'm a tool of the Man and all, but how so?
If you are a new player (haven't played ME1 or ME2) you learn who Shepard is, why he's on earth, what the Reaper threat is, and then the story begins.
If you are a continuing player (have played either or both of the previous games) you already know the plot and character development because you helped form it with your previous play throughs and the story picks up after ME2.
I'm sorry you're disappointed, but I'm not completely sure why?

I think it means people feel the intro is kind of rushed/unpolished. So, what you mean is that no matter if we import or not, we get the same opening to the game?
Thanks for the clarification, by the way.

You yourself said several months ago that the way you handled "the trial" set the tone for the rest of the game. I have played the demo several times. There is no trial in it. This is where the confusion is coming from, certainly for me.

There being no backlash from the Batarians makes sense as the Repears utterly destroyed them shortly after Arrival.Xarathox wrote...

If get same start whether import or start new that is disappointment (imho), shows a lack of care and attention from the offset and does not bode well for attention to detail (just possibly) throughout the rest of the game. It becomes force fed story/plot for what is probably the most important part of the game. It would have to recover very fast from a generic canonisation to aviod (imho) more disappointment.
