Clearly Bioware didn't watch RedLetterMedia eaither...as they are doing the EXACT SAME crap Lucas did with those movies. Granted I -like- those movies...but I still admit theres serious problems with them.

A good way to explain the problem with the ME3 opening is to imagine you watch Star Wars A New Hope, then immediately watch Return of the Jedi right afterwards, because Empire doesn't exist.

So Jedi begins...ah, the two droids. We know who they are, that's cool. Oh...but why is Han in carbonite?! When did that happen??? O.O

Who is this Lando Calrissian guy? WTF when did Luke get so confident? Why isn't he using a blue lightsabre? What the heck happened to his hand? How come none of the characters seem surprised by any of this??? O.O

That's kinda how it is feeling atm. The oh so clever scheme to increase book/comic/DLC sales in order for players to fill in the gaps is...not very nice.

Not to mention the whole "This is the best place to jump in!" sales pitch...thats like saying you can totaly ignore A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back and go RIGHT to Return of the Jedi and get the ENTIRE experience.

Ow... And I used US Army FM and Regulations and ADnD 2nd edition approach sort of "unless states otherwise, masculine nouns and pronouns do not refer exclusively to men."
Thanks for claryfying that for me. Posted Image

Bioware has gone out of it's way to tell everyone that the game is accessible for new gamers. Hell, in an interview with the Doctors recently, they said numerous times that ME3 is the best entry point into the series. The funny think about the opening is that its terrible if you haven't played the first 2 games. You have absoluteley no idea whats going on aside from the fact you are being summoned to some sort of meeting. The opening is weak whether you are returning to the franchise or just getting started with it.

By looking at how fast and actiony it all is I'd guess Bioware believes that the text screen at the start is enough. New players know they're Shepard, an army of supreme machines are attacking and that Shepard is the only hope. Generic shooter fans really don't want or need to know more "Yea yea get out of my way strange guy", "Hacking minigame? BORING!", "Oh cool now we get to shoot stuff".

Here's hoping the first mission is actually just a nightmare tutorial. Then Shepard wakes on his Cerberus ship or atleast has just been taken to custody and then the dawn of trial follows. You move through small city section (or explore a bit, talk to some people etc.) to the court and dialogue follows. Difference is that the nightmare before was nothing, in reality Shepard is getting roasted first by the court and then later on the world is roasted by Reapers much worse than in the nightmare (You don't see much details in dreams and it explains loopholes like Reapers just strolling through from moon to Earth without any message from Alliance armada)

Sure devs said the trial is cut and all, but I naively believe it's just a lie to not spoiler us

Ah, so my problems with sending PMs out all day long weren't just mine? If something happens in Black Mesa - it's not my fault. And that's official!

I would have liked to see just the tail end of trial that concludes with Shepard losing his ship and being grounded... Fade to black, and then open back up to the scene of (fake lol) kid playing with toy.

They could even started without trial or hearings, simply landing Normandy and placing Shepard in "detention center" under guard of Vega (for example) or in same cell/room with him (Vega doesn't look like "good turian", you knowPosted Image). Then game could execute perform barrel roll blackout and starts like in Demo with text like "several months later".

It seems one of the other threads parallels this one. (edit: Games are no longer stand alone.)

That thread mentions ME: Conviction, which turns out is an exclusive comic with all the relevant info.

A little more searching and I find this link, with the comic removed by Mr. Priestly... how would I know of this part of the plot when it appears in an obscure comic and bridges the gap between ME 2 to ME 3?

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/323/index/8340087

A little more searching and I find this in a Wiki, stating you need a voucher to get the comic:

The comic was first mentioned in an interview with Mac Walters on July 26, 2011 as an unnamed third eight-page comic that he was working on, but no details were provided. Mass Effect: Conviction was released in September 2011 through Dark Horse Digital. Currently, the only way to obtain the comic is by receiving a voucher at a participating comic retail store.

But you can get the gist of the comic from the Wiki; but this really should appear in the story, not from some voucher to get an obscure comic. And we should not have to run around like it's a treasure hunt to find pertinent info:

They could have at least had the little kid in a red shirt. Geez Bioware! You've got to lets us people knowz the kid is gonna die.

My guess is that we'll find out exactly what happened in the trial from Ashley/Kaiden who probably testified against us. And that we were supposed to be there for sentencing when the Reapers attacked. That's my guess. But that's a guess. I didn't read "Conviction". We don't even have a bookstore in our area anymore. Borders went out of business after they put all the other stores out of business.

This really should be in the game.

Ok, I know I'm a tool of the Man and all, but how so?

If you are a new player (haven't played ME1 or ME2) you learn who Shepard is, why he's on earth, what the Reaper threat is, and then the story begins.

If you are a continuing player (have played either or both of the previous games) you already know the plot and character development because you helped form it with your previous play throughs and the story picks up after ME2.

I'm sorry you're disappointed, but I'm not completely sure why?

Because you can't make a crappy and rushed intro to a game that explains nothing and then blame the players when they can't seem to fill in the blanks.
How are we supposed to know who James Vega is if he isn't mentioned at the end of ME2 or the Beginning of ME3? and why are we suddenly all friendly with him? What happened to our ship and why is it now alliance? Why is Shepard being led to a courtroom that is a defense council? and most importantly, Why is Shepard not in prison for killing hundreds of thousands of Batarians?
It seems like quite a long time has passed between ME2 and ME3 so how are we supposed to know what happened if you don't actually bother informing us about it in either game?

Did you ever stop to think maybe some of that info might come AFTER the frantic escape from Earth while the Reapers attack bit? BioWare isn't one to just not introduce their characters, after all. So, yeah, maybe some of the info about James and what you did on the "Arrival" mission will get talked about on the Normandy, once you reach the Citadel, or at some other point during the 97% of the game we haven't seen yet? Come on, doomsayers. It was a short demo and the 2nd mission was cut down for size and presumably spoilers. Relax.

Also, come to think of it, yes, a short cinematic recap of the Arrival mission and then a "6 months later" thing would have helped ease new players and players who didn't play Arrival into it. Seems easy enough, I guess. Maybe something like that is in the full game before the intro or maybe not. Either way, it is what it is at this point. It's not so bad if they talk about it shortly after the intro and fill everybody in to what has been going on, which I'm sure they will.

I'm so damn tierd of seeing "MAYBE IT COMES AFTER DUH STFU!"...I will tell ALL OF YOU RIGHT NOW....WHY that is the STUPIDEST way to go about that. You wana talk about a trial giving **** pacing? How about having Reapers blow the HOLY HELL out of everything...then suddenly pausing the entire Galactic War AFTER IT STARTED to explain everything to us!? How is -that- NOT **** pacing?! How is explaining what happend BEFORE THE WAR STARTS AFTER THE WAR STARTS better pacing then showing it to us...idk BEFORE THE WAR STARTS!? Has RedLetterMedia taught you people nothing!?

I'll just leave this here...

My thoughts exactly (on threePosted Image posters above, at least to some extent).
Not that I don't like "expanded (or it's extended?) universe" phenomenon, fine, everyone makes money in those ways he see fit, but why put relatively important info into some "invotations only" club?
To be honest one and only "expanded" stuff I ever liked was "Liberty's crusade" book on Starcraft. I especially liked part about coffee - it sounds like Grubb was fed in our's regimental mess hall. But what I really liked - how carefully he touched existed game and characters. Nothing really new and groundshaking, just different point of few. Just right - if you didn't read that book, nothing changes, SC will be SC. If you read, then you just got new "angle" to look at on well known characters.

It's unlikely.

For one, I'd highly doubt either of the two would have testified against Shepherd after knowing what they did and the shared experiences.

For the other, it again goes back to the intro scenes. Anderson says Shepherd avoided court-martial and punishment. Yet, Shepherd's already no longer in command of the Normandy and no longer in the Alliance military, so...

Even if they did say "ok, here's the trip to the Citadel, now you get exposition and backstory", it's already a moot point because the early script conflict simply can't be resolved with further dialogue absent logical gymnastics that would destroy character arcs in development since ME 1.

Yea you win. It's painfully obvious story isn't Bioware's strong point anymore. They care more about the damn romances than anything else. Man I can't wait to see what Obsidian decides to make if they go through with the kickstarter idea.

I don't know, after what's being said on Horizon... Even Kaidan's friendly face in Demo doesn't persuade me enough.
However, to be honest I really want no more "mexican standoffs" between team-mates. Wrex was enough.
I'd believe in Alenko's common sense but seeing what Bioware writers can write sometimes - give me creeps.

I'm not sure what descript this situation better - proverb "everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die" or "morton's fork". Probably only 2008 USA presidental elections bumper sticker - "either way we screwed".
From all points of view, starting from Shepard's "supsended" situation and logic and common sense.

"Romances"? What "romances"? 6 "talks" with LI in ME1, 4 "talks" with LI in ME2? What it'll be in ME3 - just 2 of them? Yes, ToB "serenades" were shorter than those from SoA, but c'mon, even they were longer than any "romance" from ME.

Hell yeah! Maybe their games are not as polished (ahem!) as they should be, but at least they have interesting gameplay. That's worth and beats anything.

So the start of the demo is the actual start of the game?
There is nothing before it?
If so that is very dissapointing!
And does anyone know if there will be anymore dialogue choices than was in the demo? (Earth)
