I think BioWare shot themselves in the foot when it comes to ME2 with the suicide mission. It created too many variables and there were already so many squadmates to account for. We have to pay for their lack of foresight by losing out on our favorites. It sucks and will make the game a lot less enjoyable than it could have been.

The devs already admitted that allowing anyone to die in the Suicide Mission was a design mistake they regret

I actually agree with you OP.  I think any of those three would have been great to have as squadmates.  Esp. Miranda and Legion.  For my personal preferences, though, I would add Kasumi.  From her look to her voice and her personality, I felt that she was better realized than almost every other Me2 squadmate, right up there with Mordin and Legion quality-wise.  She was such a great and memorable character in spite of having no real dialogue.  Still, her absence is at least totally understandable.

I find myself annoyed at the whole free pass for Tali and Garrus, but whatever.  I never cared much for either of them but perhaps they will redeem themselves in Me3.  Well, Garrus, at least.  I'm redoing the end of my Me2 playthrough to have Tali killed.  She'll not be forced upon me a third time.  But she'll die a hero.  Along with Zaeed.  Always felt a completely perfect SM run was a little too sunshine and rainbows anyhow.

I think the current squad looks well-rounded and condensed. I wouldn't have put EDI on it, but it looks... interesting? I think seven squadmates is plenty (I'm counting right, right?). If you removed EDI, Vega and Prothy (nothing against them I just don't know them).
I would put Jacob (in place of Vega). He's a soldiers, he's a bro, and I think he has the grounds to be a well-developed character. Call me crazy.
Instead of EDI, Legion. Seems to be a logical choice. He's a pretty plot important character who I think has potential for much more development.
And Prothy would be tough to replace since he's DLC.
Also, I might take a lot of heat for this, but I think Liara would've been better as a full-time Shadow Broker and Tali would've been better helping the Quarians. Don't get me wrong I romanced Liara, then switched and stuck with Tali. But they could be easier written somewhere else. I might move Mordin and Jack/Samara into their spots. I don't like Jack, but it makes sense. Samara wasn't developed enough in my opinion and she could use more than a cameo in this game. Maybe Thane could fit in somewhere.
Miranda is better with Cerberus
Zaeed and Kasumi are Mercenaries.
Wrex and Grunt are with Krogans.

I'd replace EDI with Wrex.

As much as i love Zaeed, we have enough soldiers :( EDI is stupid in my opinion and she would be replaced with legion. Vega is pointless and is killing everyones dreams of reuniting with wrex so they would be switched. i'd also love thane back :)

Just Kasumi and Thane. The others i dont mind having simple cameos.

Alrhough a good alternative would've been to have at least one sqaudmate from ME2 you could rotate out. Like if you wanted Zaeed you could get him, but if you wanted to switch out, he'd leave the Normandy and you'd pick up someone else. Just my thoughts.

This has been said a lot but Miranda and Legion really should've been on the squad! Just a mistake by Bioware! They both have so much potential and plot relevence. Miranda helps deal with the Cerberus arc then joins you. Legion helps deal with the geth problem then joins you. How hard would that have been? Just a horrible mistake... I also have no idea what Bioware was thinking when they put Liara and Tali on the squad! Liare should be at the Shadow Broker Base feeding you vital infomation and STAYING SAFE! If she dies...who takes over? And Tali should be with the Quarians, not following Shepard again! But whatever, big mistake Bioware. Hopefully they can redeem it and make it good.

Sorry, I'll stop ranting...
