----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: Just letting you guys know, I compiled these instructions in a blog
                 post for posterity: http://social.biowar...64/blog/211646/
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did always find it whack that you couldn't see your face code if you imported your Shepard from ME1.

Now, I can only speak to the Xbox version, but those of you saying you can see your code even though you imported from ME1 may want to double check that code. There is a bug where if you import a ME1 Shep, then go to the customize face option, but then back out of it and accept the imported face, when the game starts it will show you a face code, but it will be for the customized shep you started to make, not the one you imported.

Now, there is actually a way to see your ME1 face code, but it takes some fancy computer maneuvers (especially if you're on the Xbox). You can skip steps 1-4 if you're on PC.

( WARNING: Doing this for the Xbox requires the use of the program Modio to look at the values in your save file. Using Modio to modify your save files is against the Xbox Live Terms of Service and can result in both your Xbox and Gamertag being banned from Xbox Live. Use Modio at your own risk. )

1) Format a USB flash drive in your Xbox.
2) Start up ME2 and create a new game by importing your ME1 Shep.
3) Go through the intro and when you wake up in Lazarus Base, save your game on the flash drive (or move it there later).
3) Back to your PC, pop in the flash drive and download Modio.
4) Using Modio, open up the save game file on the flash drive and export the .xbsav file to your hard drive.
(UPDATED: See screen shots and detailed steps below for using Modio if you need it)
5) Go to the ME2 Save Editor, register, and upload your .xbsav file (.pcsav file if you're on PC).
6) Click on the My Saves Tab, then the Morph Head button, then export the YAML file.
7) Go to the Mass Effect Tools upload page (Female | Male), give your Shepard file a name and upload your YAML file there.
8) Go to the Mass Effect Tools code generation page (Female | Male), enter the name you entered in Step 7 and the site will give you a list of all character creation slider tick settings for the ME2 CC (far left = 1) as well as a face code for ME2/ME3.

IMPORTANT: Note that the extract doesn't give you Complexion, Scars, Eye Color, Nose Shape, Hair Style, Brow Color, or Makeup for various reasons. But you can easily determine those by doing some comparisons with your imported Shep and a fresh one you've created. Nose shape was probably the hardest one. I had to take pics with my phone and compare them.

9) Now,  I personally would not take your code straight into ME3, because even if the code is correct, the ME3 face looks dissimilar enough that you might not be sure. At this point what I would do is start a new ME2 game with your ME1 import and at the character creator screen enter the code and tweak from there. The great part about this is you have your imported face there available, so you can compare it with what you have so far with the code.

If you're curious, the technical math behind the face codes can be found here.
-------------------
Using Modio in Step 4

Step 4a) From the main Modio window make sure your USB flash drive is selected and click "Open from a device"
Posted Image

Step 4b) Progress through these next screens by selecting your profile, game, and then career.
Posted Image

Step 4c) From the career screen select the File Contents tab
Posted Image

Step 4d) In this tab, right click the save file you want to extract and click "Extract File". This will let you save the .xbsav file to your computer hard drive
Posted Image

-------------------

I did this earlier today so I could see how my Shep would look in ME3. (You'll have to forgive the crappy phone pics. My fiancee absconded with the camera).

ME2 Shep:

ME3 Conversion:

Now my initial gut reaction was, "OMG that doesn't look like her at all!" But truth be told, the charcater creation (and squad screen) isn't very flattering. Playing the demo with her and seeing her animated she looks a lot better and I can tell that she's my Shep.

The biggest difference is the hairstyle (obviously) but I like that it looks like hair and not plastic. The thing that kinda bothers me though is the hair color. My Shep has hair color code 5 which in ME1 and ME2 is equal parts red and brown. But in ME3 it is nearly completely brown. It is slightly reddish when the sunlight hit it in certain cutscenes. I tried giving her the full on red hair, but that didn't look quite right either. In the end I think I'm ok with this. In the game she looks great. And you know, sometimes people get different hair cuts and dye their hair. :D

What happens if my Shepard had this hairstyle?

It wasn't in the hairstyles you could choose.

I as well would like to know. I think it imports the same style, as ME2 didnt have that hair but when you import you can have that style!

I've been hearing mixed results. I really hope I don't have to re-create all my Shepard's faces, again.

Four of my friends tried their face codes, all four came out way off.

I wonder if this is yet another symptom of Bioware's apparent habit of putting new players' needs ahead of their returning fans.

pictures of my old ME2 Shepard and the new one, using the same code:

http://a6.sphotos.ak...222046773_n.jpg
The pictures of ME2 are of an imported Shepard and of a Shepard, which was meant to be a look-alike.
I'm worried that imported Shepars will not look the same as they were.

copying the face code != character import.

on character import its suppose to use polygon/texture data to keep them the same on import. Thats what they did between ME1 and ME2 so that the changes to the character creator didn't effect an import.

If they havn't done the same this time its another notch in the "we rushed this game" bed post.

I used this method w/ the femshep below. She had no ME2 code. I had changed her hair in gibbed between ME1 and ME2.

This is my broShep using the same process. I think I got his hair wrong as I hadn't played him in a while, but I did add stubble in ME3.

I tried that method above to get a face code to see what my Shepard would look like in 3 and wow was it way off.

Just one of the things was that she went from a white woman with black eyebrows to a black woman with white eyebrows.

Hopefully the import feature in the full game works and I wont have to recreate my Shepard.

My canon Shepard is 'former' default FemShep

To move her into the demo I used the face code from ME2 CC. And that's what I got.

Here is another example. This one is almost the same.

Eyebrow colour did not match in my case but other than that it looked correct - though the new stuff (eyes, hair) kinda makes Shepard look a bit different. Hair and eyebrow colours look darker in ME3.

Also if you get face code for imported Shepard it is wrong face code. That's the case no matter what. Imported Shepards never get face code in ME2. Code might appear if you pick the option to make new face but then revert back to imported but it will still be wrong face code.

In the demo, no. In the full game, yes they should work.

Got a weird thingy here on 360: My Shep from ME2 has a code, but this code is one of the PRESET Sheps of the Creator. What's up with that!?

You imported your ME1 Shepard, selected option to start from scratch but then reverted back to you imported face and bam. You get the preset face code, which is wrong. Imported ME1 faces never get face code (other than that bug).

has anyone with a space edition/full copy confirmed ME3 isn't using polygon/texture data to keep the character the same on import (like ME1 -> ME2)? maybe it's just a demo thing where the Shepards look, uh, nothing like the ones in ME2 even with the face code.

I didn't realize until now how my Shepard has apparently aged through the trilogy:

Posted Image

Pretty neat. I don't know whether it's mostly due to higher-res textures and better lighting or if BioWare has been subtly changing the textures and preset contours over time to intentionally achieve this effect, but it worked out.

It has to use raw data or no ME1 Shepards get imported.

My ME3 Shep looks exactly like my ME2 shep, although I had to make a couple of alterations. Changing the eyebrow colour and eyes.

Hello, maybe a stupid question, but I have just prepared my Shepard and got the file with settings. If I can read

[HEAD]  Neck Thickness 22  Face Size 21
That means, that for neck thickness, I must set the slide to the most left and then do 22 clicks and for face 21 clicks? Thanks.

My scenario: I imported my Xbox 360 ME1 character into ME2 and then edited her face slightly. I no longer have ME2, so does anybody know if this would have given me the correct face code and allow me to avoid the straight ME1 > ME2 > ME3 import errors people are talking about?

Depends how you mean, but you get the idea. Just know that the far left end of the slider is 1. So to get to face size 21, you would start at the far left and click right 20 times.

Also, the file should give you a facecode at the bottom which will help you if you're doing this in ME2.

O.K. Got it. Thanks. I used the program Janus Prospero linked, got the data, launched ME2, started a new game using my prevous savegame (the one with imported ME1 face) and then used the data to renew my face. It was not a perfect match, so I had to make some minor andjustments, but now I have a facial code which corresponds exactly with my face to copy and paste to ME3. Thanks Janus for posting that, really helped me. I just hope that the code will work in ME3.

Thanks for the advice, Janus Prospero, but even with fixing the hair, that method isn't helpful in case my ME1 face doesn't go into ME3...

ME1:
http://cloud.steampo...FAC864DDF978B8/

Imported into ME2:
http://cloud.steampo...558BEBB32707B5/

Using the facecode method in ME3 Demo:
http://cloud.steampo...29EE0AC18CE9FC/

He looks similar, but it still bugs me...A lot...
Hoping things are fine in the final version of ME3...We'll see in three days.
