Ashley. Your relationship with her feels more realistic than all the rest of the LIs in the franchise. With most other LIs, there's hardly any buildup to them falling in love with you. It just....happens.

But with Ashley, you actually engage in all kinds of conversation with her instead of making kissy faces. You discuss topics and issues such as politics, family, military, the missions, view on life and you share your feelings on the loss of a comrade and friend. Then from time to time you work in a little flirt here and there. You feel your relationship grow. When the time comes that they confess their feelings for one another, they never at one point say "I love you" or anything like that. It's subtle and doesn't insult your intelligence. Ashley simply says "I...want you to be happy."

Towards the end of the game when the sex scene comes, again it's not something cheesy and sappy. There's serious dialogue sure, but there's also playful words exchanged as well. Ashley seems like a girl that isn't someone who could be just your GF, but can be your best friend as well.

That's my two cents anyway.

There's nothing wrong with preferring one LI over the other. However I contend that you continue to assert that Liara is fully devoted without offering a single shred of evidence. What does it mean to be "fully devoted" and how is Liara so? Which exact parts of her romance are unrealistic?

That statement would lead to a flamewar, therefore, dear Sir, I can't answer your question. :police:

Okay, more serious answer: remember my "it's a matter of taste" line? Right. That's it. I simply don't enjoy Liara's romance arc, and I do have currently a fem!Shep dealing with her. It doesn't feel wrong or something - it's just not what I am looking for.
Uhh, and if my Shep wants kids, they should have some traits of himself. Blue children - cute. But not (my) Shepard's dream when thinking about children.

The fanfiction does it for me as well - somehow Liara is always described as devoted while other characters, most notable Miranda and Ashley have their own ideas how a relationship should work. That's what I enjoy.

Fanfic...ugghhh. Won't deign to address that.

Its OK not to enjoy Liara's romance arc. Its not cool to denigrate it or imply those that do enjoy it are defective. I still have no idea why you think Liara is particularly devoted for what its worth.

I am not fan of either (or any) romance, but if I had to pick, I'd take Liara.

Threads like this show how ignorant some peeps can be. This thread was started to get a flame war going against both characters and their fans. Childish... simply childish.

Whichever relationship you feel is more compelling is more compelling.

I feel Liara's is, soooo that makes Liara's relationship compelling to me, and honestly that's all that matters.

^ and that's why I'm out before it starts getting ugly.

@ HolyAvanger: guess Liara is what the fandom see in her, same for Ashley. And that may lead to some impressions which are either not true (like Ashley's "racism" - and still it's public opinion she's a racist), So I guess it's widespread "knowledge" Liara is more or less entirely fascinated of & devoted to Shepard.
Nothing wrong with that.
It's just not my taste.

One thing: I apologize for the stuff that got down the wrong throat. Wasn't really meant that way.

There are a number of relationships that are superior to that of Williams. Liara does go in search of Shepard's body, but she doesn't collect it to revive you. She does it so that you can get a funeral. When she hands Shep's carcass over to Cerberus they tell her that they are going to attempt to restore him. She reluctantly agrees and we see the end result.

But Liara isn't the only one who believes in Shepard. Tali comes from a people who experienced violence from Cerberus, Quarians died and even on Freedom's Progress, Cerberus wants to continue treating the Quarians as property rather than as people. Yet, she stands by Shepard.

Miranda needs Cerberus to protect both herself and her sister from her estranged father. She stands by Shepard knowing first hand how dangerous it is to defy TIM and places both herself and her sister at risk to stand by Shepard.

Ashley? In less than three and one half minutes of not seeing you for more than two years and with Shepard having saved her life for the third time, she abandons you on Horizon as a fraud and a traitor. I think that her record speaks for itself.

Therefore, I believe that Liara, Tali, and Miranda are all superior relationships when compared to that of Ashley.

I kinda agree.

Liara: For reasons stated.  She has his best interest at heart
Tali: kinda like that nerdy girl next door who has a secret crush.  there's tension
Miranda: Other than "the obvious", there was good build up.  Though Shepard's line were a little creepy....

Liara even though should suffers slightly from multiple personality syndrome due to writer 'creativity'. Ash....I don't know I didn't mind her in the first game, but how they've developed her since just seems sort of irritating. After seeing some of the **** she pulls in the leaked script, definitely cemented the fact I wouldn't mind killing her off. It's sort of like a first wife, great at the start but I think Shepard has way outgrown her as she missed everything in ME 2 and basically didn't develop as a character. Liara at least was doing stuff I could understand.

I like them both, but I prefer Ashley's. There are tons of reasons why, but a big part is b/c she (and Kaidan) follow the Three Act Structure.

This thread sums it all very well how I feel.

Doesn't that depend on what yor Shepard is looking for? And yes I say Shepard because you're not playing yourself are you?
Both romances have something going for them, something people enjoy, find compelling.

As for me? I strongly dislike that Liara comes off purely as fanservice in the first game, also it feels almost as much like you're taking advance of her than the Tali romance does (imo). And the Ashley romance? I get why people see Liara as obsessive and stalkerish but for me that's Ash because I just can't overlook that I talked to her once(!) in my Liara romancing playthrough and suddenly I had her being all annoyed at me and asking me to choose between her and Liara. That's how the game works but I can't help but see this as a characterisation of Ashley....

I came in here to make a snarky comment and leave, but god damn it if your logic doesn't appeal to the English teacher in me.  Ah, I love good argument. :wizard:  Well done, sir or madam.!

It WAS Ashley until Lair of the Shadow Broker. Now it's kind of a toss-up.

I'll agree though that these two are the top two romances.

Both are good enough. Liara is my canon but I have a few Ashley romances that I have done. I am thinking people that stayed loyal to Ashley will get a big pay off.
